The Tennis Channel has decided to suspend journalist Jon Wertheim for comments he made regarding the appearance of current Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova during a broadcast.

This week at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Krejcikova was defeated by Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. During the event coverage last Friday, Wertheim commented on Krejcikova’s forehead. Following this, Krejcikova expressed her disappointment on social media, calling out the unprofessional nature of such remarks.

Krejcikova stated, “This is not the first instance of such behavior in sports. I’ve often chosen to stay silent, but it’s time to promote respect and professionalism in sports media.”

On Sunday, the Tennis Channel announced that Wertheim would be suspended from on-air appearances indefinitely and expressed regret to Krejcikova.

A statement from the channel said, “Tennis Channel expects all employees to treat others with respect, a standard which was not upheld in this case.”

Wertheim took to social media to apologize, explaining that his comments were made during a “private rehearsal” but accidentally aired.

“I’m not the victim here. My comments were unprofessional, unkind, and not representative of who I aspire to be. I take full responsibility. I apologize sincerely,” he said.

Wertheim also mentioned that he promptly reached out to Krejcikova to express his regrets.

Alongside his role at the Tennis Channel, Wertheim serves as a senior writer and editor for “Sports Illustrated” and is also a correspondent for CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
