Texans part ways with Bobby Slowik: Houston’s OC let go after two seasons, reports say

Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik started the 2024 NFL season with aspirations of becoming a leading candidate for head coaching positions in the upcoming 2025 hiring round.

Unfortunately, Slowik’s offense regressed in 2024, compelling Houston to seek a new approach for its offensive coordinator role.

The Texans officially parting ways with Slowik was reported by Ian Rapoport from NFL Network on Friday. This decision follows just days after the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round and a season where the Texans finished 19th in points per game and 22nd in total yards.

Additionally, Houston’s offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also being let go as part of the team’s offensive changes.

After his inaugural season as offensive coordinator, Slowik was seen as an emerging talent in the coaching ranks. He had a successful rapport with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who ended the season with a record of 9-6 over 15 starts, amassing 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. This helped Houston achieve the 12th most yards and 13th most points in the league, surprisingly advancing to the NFL playoffs’ divisional round.

However, Stroud’s performance declined in 2024. His completion rate fell from 63.9% to 63.2%, his interceptions increased from five to twelve, and his passer rating declined from 100.8 to 87, placing him 26th among qualified quarterbacks. He also endured 52 sacks this season, a significant increase from the 38 he faced during his rookie year, including eight sacks in the playoff game against the Chiefs.

Slowik might not stay on the job market for long. He attracted considerable interest during the offseason hiring season in 2024, as he interviewed for head coaching positions with the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, and Washington Commanders.

Most recently, Slowik interviewed for the head coaching position with the New York Jets, which has now been filled by Aaron Glenn.
