Texas Maintains Top Spot in US LBM Coaches Poll as College Football’s Top 10 Sees Changes

Contrary to what Credence Clearwater Revival suggested, there isn’t always a quiet period before a storm. Week 6 of college football, which seemed uneventful at first, turned out to be action-packed, with four teams in the top 10 suffering losses—and almost a fifth as well. Consequently, the US LBM Coaches Poll has significant shifts.

Texas, which had the week off, keeps its No. 1 ranking, receiving 44 out of 55 first-place votes. The 11 remaining votes went to Ohio State, now ranked No. 2, after a strong second half against Iowa. Oregon climbs three spots to No. 3, setting the stage for an exciting match against the Buckeyes next week in Eugene.

Georgia and Penn State hold the fourth and fifth positions, while Alabama and Tennessee drop five places down to No. 7 and No. 9, respectively. Alabama faced an unexpected defeat against Vanderbilt, whereas Tennessee lost on the road to Arkansas. Miami (Fla.) ascends to No. 6 after a late comeback against California. Mississippi also rises to No. 8 following a strong performance against South Carolina, and LSU makes it into the top 10.

Texas A&M jumps seven positions to No. 14 following its solid victory over Missouri, which drops nine slots to No. 18. Meanwhile, Michigan falls 11 spots to No. 21 after losing for the second time this season against Washington.

Boise State, now ranked No. 22, leads a trio of new entries in the poll this week. Pittsburgh at No. 24 and SMU at No. 25 also make their way in. Southern California, Louisville, and UNLV are no longer in the rankings.
