Winter Storm Enzo: Texas prepares for snowfall as airports close and flights face disruptions

A winter storm is expected to hit the Gulf Coast soon. Houston is forecasted to receive up to four inches of snow from Monday night into Tuesday.

Consequently, the city’s two major airports, George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby, will temporarily shut down at midnight on Tuesday. Airport officials indicated that the closure is a precautionary measure due to expected dangerous road conditions.

“Although no flights will be arriving or departing, our dedicated staff will be present around the clock to ensure we can quickly and safely resume normal operations as soon as possible,” the airport authority stated. “Houston Airports will utilize snowplows and heavy equipment to clear runways and get ready to reopen operations as soon as conditions improve.”

As of 3 p.m. ET on Monday, there were already 807 flights canceled across the U.S., with airlines taking further steps to cancel additional flights for Tuesday, according to FlightAware. United Airlines, which has a significant presence in Houston, has canceled 428 flights for Tuesday. Southwest Airlines, also heavily operating in the area, plans to cancel approximately 406 flights on the same day. Overall, more than 1,400 flight cancellations were scheduled for Tuesday by Monday afternoon.
