Season 5 of “Yellowstone” has concluded, featuring John Dutton (Kevin Costner) finally receiving the fitting funeral he deserves, emotional farewells from the cowboy community, and the significant demise of Attorney General Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), who faces family justice for his part in his father’s death. Additionally, the Yellowstone Ranch has been sold.
While the show’s creators seem to have resolved many storylines in the Season 5 finale, the future of “Yellowstone” remains uncertain. There are reports suggesting a spinoff centered around Rip and Beth, but there has been no official confirmation from Paramount, creator Taylor Sheridan, or any actors regarding the continuation of the series.
The “Yellowstone” universe, which premiered in 2018, has expanded to include several spinoffs that explore different generations of the Dutton family.
As we await a formal announcement from the creators, let’s take a look at the various “Yellowstone” spinoffs that have aired or been confirmed.
How many spinoffs of ‘Yellowstone’ exist?
Currently, there are three known spinoffs associated with “Yellowstone”: two have been released while one is in the works.
‘1883’
This prequel series follows James and Margaret Dutton, the great-grandparents of John Dutton, as they escape poverty and journey across the Great Plains in search of a better life in Montana. They receive guidance from Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) and his associate, Thomas (LaMonica Garrett). Tim McGraw and Faith Hill star as James and Margaret, respectively, alongside Elliott and Garrett.
‘1923’
The series “1923” centers on Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), who are relatives of John Dutton from “Yellowstone.” Jacob is the brother of James Dutton, portrayed by Tim McGraw in “1883.” This series explores early 20th-century challenges, including pandemics and drought, alongside the tumultuous era of Prohibition, affecting the Dutton family and their surroundings.
“1923,” which debuted on December 18, 2022, set records as “the most-watched Paramount+ premiere ever in the U.S., garnering 7.4 million viewers across all platforms” according to a February 2023 announcement, indicating it was the biggest cable series launch of 2022.
Season 2 is slated to premiere on Sunday, February 23, on Paramount+.
‘The Madison’
There’s an upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff called “The Madison,” which is currently being filmed. This series features three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer, who is both starring in and producing it. The storyline, similar to that of “1883” and “1923,” centers on a widow from New York named Stacy Clyburn (played by Pfeiffer), who leaves behind the bustling Madison Avenue for a new life in the Madison River valley in central Montana. The link to the Dutton family is yet to be specified. The cast also includes Matthew Fox as an adventurous bachelor and Patrick J. Adams. “The Madison” is expected to debut in 2025.
In October 2023, Paramount announced two additional spinoffs from creator Taylor Sheridan, titled “1944” and “2024.” However, no further details have been shared regarding these projects.
