The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back: Here’s how to catch the runway

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is making its comeback after a break since 2018.

The brand announced its return in a video on Instagram back in May, stating, “We’ve read the comments and heard you,” addressing the show’s lengthy hiatus.

L Brands, which was the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, decided to cancel the show in 2019 to “evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret” due to falling ratings and growing concerns about body image issues.

This year, the show is returning to its full glory, following a modified version that appeared on Prime Video last year, and will be aired live from New York City on Tuesday night.

Since its inception in 1995, the show has featured live performances from top musical artists like Rihanna, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Taylor Swift, showcasing renowned models such as Heidi Klum and Kendall Jenner. Recently, the brand confirmed that VS icon Adriana Lima would be back, alongside Gigi Hadid and Tyra Banks, who were announced in late August, and will walk the VS runway once again.

Tuesday’s event will be Banks’ first appearance in a VS fashion show in two decades. Here’s how you can watch this remarkable event.

What time is the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show scheduled?

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air live on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video and the official YouTube channel of the brand. There was a brief return last year with a redesigned event titled “The Tour ’23,” which was streamed on Prime Video.

The pink carpet pre-show is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Which models and performers will be featured in the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show?

This year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will showcase iconic supermodels like Lima, Banks, Barbara Palvin, Jasmine Tookes, Ashley Graham, Candice Swanepoel, and Behati Prinsloo.

Musical performances will be carried out by an all-female lineup, featuring Blackpink’s Lisa, Tyla, and music legend Cher.

This show marks a significant return for Lima, who is considered one of the brand’s most famous models. She last walked the runway during the 2018 event, where she shared an emotional farewell as she left the stage for the last time.

Lima, age 37 at that time, walked alone, visibly emotional as she reached the end of the runway, receiving a standing ovation from the audience during her last appearance, which was her 19th Victoria’s Secret show. Now 43, she reflected on her departure from this iconic event in an Instagram post.

“Dear Victoria, Thank you for showing me the world, sharing your secrets, and most importantly, not just giving me wings but teaching me to fly,” she expressed in her heartfelt caption.

This year, model Kendall Jenner will not be part of the lineup.

What’s different about the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this year?

The company stated in a brand values update released in August that it now aims to “celebrate all women.”

“Our focus is on delivering what our customers truly seek – ensuring they feel proud when shopping at Victoria’s Secret,” the statement explained. “We have transitioned from a narrow view of what is considered sexy to embracing and celebrating women at every stage of their lives.”

The statement further added: “We will maintain this trajectory and aim to be a pioneering force in retail innovation, fashion, sustainability, and creativity—focusing on the core desires of our varied customer base.”

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was discontinued amidst multiple controversies

In 2019, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was cancelled due to a series of controversies.

In May of that year, the brand announced it would be reevaluating the show. Ex-CEO Les Wexner of L Brands shared this in a statement sent to the company’s associates, indicating a shift in direction for the show.

“Fashion is an ever-evolving industry,” Wexner stated in 2019. “To grow, we must adapt and change. With that in mind, we have decided to rethink the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. We believe network television is no longer the best medium for our show.”

“Considering the drop in performance for Victoria’s Secret, we have significantly reduced our capital investment in the brand and are focusing on aligning our merchandise with customer preferences,” L Brands stated in its Q3 earnings report.

The 2018 show attracted an audience of 3.27 million viewers, which was the lowest since the event became a holiday TV fixture in 2001, with Nielsen reporting a loss of over half the audience in just two years.

However, the controversies extended beyond just viewership. In a November 2018 interview with Vogue, former chief marketing officer of L Brands, Ed Razek, suggested that “transsexuals” did not belong in the show as he felt it was a “fantasy.”

“If you’re asking whether we’ve considered including a transgender model or a plus-size model in the show, we have,” he remarked. “We even attempted to create a television special focused on plus sizes back in 2000. It received no interest then, and it still doesn’t.” He later expressed remorse over his remarks, stating that they “came off as offensive.”
