TikTok is going wild for cucumbers, thanks to the viral sensation ‘cucumber boy.’
Who would have thought that cucumbers could be so versatile?
TikTok is currently buzzing about Logan Moffitt, a 23-year-old from Ottawa, Canada, who has become a viral hit with his inventive “cucumber salad” recipes. One of his videos, featuring a “jalapeño popper cucumber,” has garnered more than 11 million views, while another, showcasing “sushi cucumber,” has over 19 million views.
“It’s kind of freaky how well cucumbers go with everything,” Moffitt expresses to his nearly 5 million followers in one clip.
Clearly, many people are on board with this cucumber enthusiasm, leading to a dedicated community of fans. “Logan, you’ve created a worldwide cucumber shortage,” exclaimed one viewer. “He started an entire trend on TikTok,” another commented.
What’s behind TikTok’s fascination with ‘cucumber boy’?
The trend surrounding cucumbers may seem odd to some, but for Moffitt, it makes total sense. The appeal of cucumbers is clear.
“Why cucumbers? I’ve always had a passion for them,” he shared with YSL News. “They are incredibly versatile and refreshing and pair well with many dishes. You can enjoy them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner – there’s never really a bad time for them.”
Moffitt didn’t initially aim to be the face of the cucumber community. He joined TikTok around four years ago and posted his first cucumber video in 2022 but only recently started sharing his cucumber recipes more frequently.
His videos follow a fairly consistent pattern, which he developed organically. He begins by slicing a whole cucumber into a jar using a mandoline slicer, then adds various ingredients — sometimes salmon cream cheese, sometimes kimchi, sometimes soy sauce, and often MSG — seals the jar, and shakes everything up before enjoying his creation.
His unique creations include cucumber cereal and salt-and-vinegar chip cucumber. Moffitt prides himself on thinking of unexpected combinations that complement cucumbers, a process he thoroughly enjoys. Viewers are often amazed by the possibilities that cucumbers present in his comments.
Can you ever have too much cucumber?
“It’s definitely a topic that divides opinions,” he notes. “Some people hear, ‘Oh, you have to eat an entire cucumber,’ and think, ‘That’s quite a lot of cucumber.’ Others, however, think it’s the perfect amount. It creates a fun little debate. Is a whole cucumber too much, or just right?” In reality, cucumbers offer several health benefits, including aiding weight loss, reducing blood sugar levels, and promoting regular bowel movements (though moderation is key).
Many fans have attempted to replicate Moffitt’s dishes. In one attempt, a TikToker accidentally sliced his finger while using a mandoline slicer, just like Moffitt. (“First-time users should definitely make sure to use the hand guard that comes with mandolines,” Moffitt advises.)
Moffitt isn’t quite sure how long his cucumber fame will last, as TikTok trends have a history of being short-lived. Nevertheless, he’s excited to see where this cucumber trend leads him.
“I’m just trying to savor this whole cucumber phenomenon while it’s still here,” he shares. “I know that food trends pop up and fade quickly, so I appreciate being a part of this experience on TikTok.”
