The Tragic Story of Martin ‘Tiger’ Bech: A Promising Princeton Receiver’s Untimely Death in New Orleans

Who was Martin ‘Tiger’ Bech? Former Princeton WR killed in New Orleans attack

Martin “Tiger” Bech, a former Princeton football player, was tragically one of at least 15 individuals who lost their lives when a driver plowed a pickup truck through a crowd in New Orleans’ French Quarter in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, Bech graduated from Princeton in 2021. He had been working in New York City as a stockbroker and was in New Orleans for the holidays. Unfortunately, he was killed while walking back to his hotel with a friend. His sister revealed that he succumbed to severe internal injuries, including head trauma, several hours post-attack.

During his years at Princeton from 2017 to 2019, Bech was a key player in the football team. His younger brother, Jack Bech, currently a member of the TCU Horned Frogs, confirmed on social media that his brother was among the victims.

“Love you always brother!” Jack Bech expressed. “You inspired me every day, and now you’re with me in every moment. I’ll take care of this family, T, don’t worry. This is for us.”

A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe has been set up to help cover funeral costs for Bech as well as medical expenses for his friend, Ryan Quigley, who was with him during the event. The campaign has already raised over $75,000.

Who is Martin “Tiger” Bech?

Born on January 28, 1997, Martin “Tiger” Bech came from a family with a strong football heritage, as his two uncles played for Louisiana State University.

Bech was an active player in the Princeton football team from 2017 to 2019, serving as both a wide receiver and kick returner. Over his college career in the Ivy League, he achieved 53 receptions for 825 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also earned All-Ivy selections as a return specialist on two occasions.

Princeton football coach Bob Surace remarked, “The nickname ‘Tiger’ was incredibly fitting for Martin. He was a fierce competitor, full of energy, and a cherished teammate. I last spoke to him about how proud I was of his development while at Princeton and his accomplishments since graduation. My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Bech family.”

Jack Bech, Martin’s younger brother, played as a wide receiver for the TCU Horned Frogs, finishing the 2024 season with 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns from 62 receptions. He has announced his intention to enter the 2025 NFL Draft.
