Are You Up for Hot Chocolate with Bone Broth?
Bone broth hot chocolate may not be the nostalgic winter drink we remember from our childhood. So, why is it gaining so much attention now?
Wellness influencers on platforms like TikTok and Instagram are promoting this unusual twist on the classic holiday drink, claiming it’s a more nutrient-rich substitute for traditional hot chocolate. Many who’ve tasted it assure us that it tastes better than it seems.
Fallon Danae Lee, a food creator online, shares her version of the recipe:
- 1/2 cup of plain, unseasoned chicken bone broth
- 1 cup of whole milk, or a combination of 1/4 cup heavy cream with 1/2 cup milk, or 1/2 cup coconut milk with 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
- 1 to 2 tablespoons of cacao powder, “adjust according to how chocolatey you prefer”
- A splash of vanilla
- A pinch of sea salt
- 1 scoop of collagen, optional
Nutritional experts say that indulging in your favorite seasonal treats is perfectly fine (even without the nutritional enhancements), but here’s how incorporating bone broth could help you meet your nutrition goals this winter.
What Exactly is Bone Broth?
Bone broth is a clear liquid made by simmering animal bones—commonly found as beef and chicken broths in stores.
“Bone broth might appear to be a new trend, but it’s been a respected nutritional source for tens of thousands of years,” Dr. William Li, a Harvard-trained physician, researcher, and author of “Eat To Beat Your Diet,” previously shared with YSL News. “Its surge in popularity today can be attributed to the contemporary health benefits that have been associated with bone broth, along with various marketing claims by different brands.”
Bone broth offers minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc—making it a nutritious option praised for its many health advantages.
“It provides collagen, iron, and protein, so as a fundamental component, it supplies a considerable amount of nutrition,” registered dietitian Dalina Soto previously explained to YSL News.
Are There Any Drawbacks to Drinking Bone Broth?
There aren’t many significant drawbacks to consuming bone broth, but it’s crucial to keep in mind that it should serve as a base for a balanced meal, not as a stand-alone meal. In other words, don’t follow Gwyneth Paltrow’s example by claiming that drinking bone broth for lunch is sufficient.
“It’s a nutrient-dense version of hot water. It shouldn’t be considered a regular source of calories,” Li noted. Even for those hoping to use bone broth as a low-calorie option for weight loss, it cannot replace complete meals.
If you’re aiming to reap the health benefits of bone broth while ensuring you consume enough carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vegetables, and calories, Li recommends using it as a foundation for recipes like these:
- Tonkotsu ramen
- Vegetable stew
- Bean chili
- Minestrone soup
