Top Thrill 2 roller coaster at Cedar Point to remain closed until 2025
Thrill-seekers will have to look elsewhere for excitement at Cedar Point this season.
On Friday afternoon, the amusement park located in Sandusky, Ohio, revealed that the highly awaited Top Thrill 2 roller coaster will not be reopening this year.
This coaster, which was revamped from the original Top Thrill Dragster, debuted with much excitement at the beginning of the season but was shut down just eight days later due to issues.
Teams from the manufacturer Zamperela have been dismantling the coaster trains and analyzing the track, conducting test runs with empty trains during late-night and early-morning hours when the park is closed.
Although Cedar Point had initially indicated that the ride might reopen this season, they have not provided details about the specific issues encountered with the coaster.
Unfortunately, the necessary modifications could not be completed in time for this year’s season.
“We are very disappointed not to be able to open the ride this season, but we are dedicated to providing an outstanding and reliable coaster experience for our guests in 2025,” the park expressed in their announcement.
Top Thrill’s Problematic History
The Top Thrill 2 was developed from the original Top Thrill Dragster, which was closed following a serious injury to a rider in August 2021.
The original coaster experienced several issues since it opened in 2003.
It was notorious for frequent operational failures due to its unique launch system, which propelled riders over a towering height of 420 feet.
The redesigned coaster kept the original tower and introduced a second one to ensure that all riders could undergo the rollback experience that occasionally occurred with the initial Top Thrill Dragster when the launch system malfunctioned.
Last year, the park dedicated several months to rebuilding and testing the new Top Thrill 2 coaster, maintaining much of the original track layout while adding new features, including an improved launch system, streamlined coaster cars, and the additional tower reaching similarly impressive heights.
Top Thrill 2 in Numbers
The Top Thrill 2 claims the title of the fastest triple-launch strata coaster in the world.
The coaster features two towering structures that each reach 420 feet high and launches riders three times at thrilling speeds of 74 mph, 101 mph, and a final heart-pounding 120 mph.
With a total track length of 3,422 feet, the entire ride experience lasts about two minutes from start to finish.
Riders access the coaster vehicles from the platform, and once they are secured in place, the loading track moves them onto the main track for the exhilarating launches.
There are three racing-themed coaster cars adorned in metallic blue, silver, and black colors.
