On the eve of their season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Minnesota Timberwolves finalized a three-year, $110 million contract extension with center Rudy Gobert, according to a source who spoke to YSL News Sports.

This source requested anonymity due to the extension still awaiting official announcement.

Gobert, who has won the Defensive Player of the Year award four times, is now signed with the Timberwolves until the end of the 2027-28 season, with a total contract value of $153.8 million.

Following the Timberwolves’ trade of Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, securing Gobert for the future became crucial for a team with aspirations of winning the Western Conference. Minnesota reached the conference finals last year but was defeated by Dallas.

The Timberwolves acquired Gobert from the Utah Jazz prior to the 2022-23 season. Initially, it took some time for him to adjust to his new team, raising concerns that the trade, which involved five first-round draft picks, might not work out well for Minnesota.

However, last season, Gobert produced impressive stats, averaging 14 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game, while shooting an outstanding 66.1% from the floor, leading Minnesota to become the top defensive team in the league.

Gobert was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season.
