Tito Jackson, Michael Jackson’s brother and Jackson 5 co-founder, passes away at 70

Tito Jackson, best known for his work with the Jackson 5 along with his siblings, has passed away at the age of 70.

“Our hearts are heavy, and we are in disbelief. Our father was a remarkable person who genuinely cared for everyone,” the brothers wrote alongside a series of nostalgic photos featuring Tito and the Jackson 5, shared through Tito’s official Instagram account.

“It will always be ‘Tito Time’ for us. Remember to follow our father’s wisdom: ‘Love One Another.’ We love you, Dad.”

The initially reported news of Tito’s passing came from “ET,” with Steve Manning, a close family friend and former manager, stating that he died on Sunday.

YSL News has reached out to a representative for Tito Jackson for further comments.

Tito, together with his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, became iconic in the music scene as a part of the Jackson 5 and later The Jacksons. Their hits include four consecutive Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles: “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There,” which launched the phenomenon known as Jacksonmania, showcasing their vocal talents and choreography under the strict guidance of their father, Joe Jackson.

In 1997, the Jackson 5 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Tito earning three Grammy nominations for best R&B performance and best contemporary vocal performance with the group. The band released 16 studio albums, including 10 as the Jackson 5 and six as The Jacksons, achieving massive success both as a collective and as individual artists, marking their presence especially within Black households across America.

Tito also pursued a solo music career, launching albums “Tito Time” in 2016 and “Under Your Spell” in 2021. He continued to create music, collaborating with Brazilian singer Natalia Damini for the song “Attitude” last year.

Born in Gary, Indiana, Jackson was the third of ten children in his family, which included his brothers and fellow performers as well as siblings Randy, Rebbie, La Toya, Brandon, and Janet. Their parents, Joe and Katherine, moved into their modest two-bedroom home at 2300 Jackson St. in January 1950, which would later inspire the name of The Jacksons’ 1989 album and its lead single.

As the group’s popularity waned, the Jackson brothers began pursuing solo careers, with Jermaine and Michael each finding distinctive paths.

Michael Jackson, who became a transformative figure in music known as the King of Pop, passed away on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50, from an accidental drug overdose in Los Angeles, leaving behind a complicated legacy marred by various allegations.

This past summer, Tito reflected on his brother Michael on the 15th anniversary of his passing. He shared a heartfelt black-and-white photo of Michael with several poignant hashtags expressing love and remembrance.

Just days before his death, Tito joined his brothers Jackie and Marlon to pay tribute at a memorial for Michael in Munich before a concert.

“We’re immensely thankful for this special place that honors not just his memory, but our collective legacy as well,” Tito wrote on Instagram alongside a photo from the memorial covered in flowers and images of Michael. “Thank you for preserving his spirit.”

Tito, Jackie, and Marlon had planned to perform as The Jacksons with concerts upcoming on October 25 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and November 1 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
