Tom Brady Addresses Patrick Mahomes’ Pursuit of His Super Bowl Legacy

Tom Brady shares his thoughts on Patrick Mahomes chasing his Super Bowl legacy

NEW ORLEANS – Tom Brady has never won three consecutive Super Bowls, but Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have the chance to make history this Sunday by claiming victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59. Brady, who holds the record for the most Super Bowl wins with seven, will be on the call as he completes his first season as a FOX game analyst.

During a conference call with the media on Wednesday, Brady opted for a diplomatic response when asked about Mahomes’ bid to enter the record books and how he compares to Brady himself.

“The comparisons are naturally engaging for the media since they provide fresh perspectives and stories for discussion,” Brady explained, “but as a competitor, I never saw it that way.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Brady and Mahomes met for a pre-recorded segment that will air ahead of Sunday’s game, where Brady expressed his support, saying he feels “nobody is happier for you than me” if Mahomes and the Chiefs achieve the remarkable feat of a three-peat.

Brady’s New England Patriots never managed to secure three consecutive championships, despite coming close after the 2004 season. Moreover, if the Patriots had triumphed over the Eagles in Super Bowl 52, they would have had three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018.

Brady understands why fans draw comparisons between them, but insists that he never judged his career in comparison to anyone else.

“I approached the game with the mindset of, ‘How can I be the best for myself and my teammates?’” Brady stated. “I aimed to be the best version of myself every single season without measuring myself against anyone else.”

Although he refrained from comparing himself to Mahomes, Brady was full of praise for him.

“I have immense respect for Patrick both as a player and a person,” Brady noted. “Ever since he entered the league, I have held him in very high regard, considering all he has faced and continues to face in striving for greatness.”

When it comes to placing Mahomes’ achievements in historical context, Brady admits it’s not his specialty. However, he does recognize the mental and emotional strength Mahomes contributes to the game.

“He’s highly competitive and has a strong drive for success,” Brady remarked. “His approach in practice and the offseason, as well as during games, exemplifies what it truly takes to excel.”

Addressing any speculation about the Chiefs receiving favorable treatment from referees, a claim that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed as “ridiculous” on Monday, Brady stated that he never made excuses during his playing career.

“I get that officials have a challenging task,” Brady said. “Ideally, I’d like their jobs to be a bit easier.”

Brady acknowledged the complexity of officiating, as referees have to make split-second decisions on plays that can be analyzed in slow motion with multiple camera angles by viewing audiences at home.

“These officials are highly skilled,” Brady said. “They don’t reach this level in their careers without being the best. They won’t make every call perfectly; I don’t always get everything right in the broadcasting booth either, and I certainly didn’t as a quarterback.”
