Tom Brady talks about ‘Philly Special’ during Fox’s coverage of NFC championship game
Tom Brady has no hard feelings towards Nick Foles, just a tinge of jealousy.
During Fox’s coverage, viewers saw the former Philadelphia Eagles player and Super Bowl 52 MVP lounging in a suite at Lincoln Financial Field while watching the NFC championship game between Philadelphia and the Washington Commanders. Brady, who faced Foles when the New England Patriots lost in that Super Bowl, provided commentary for the game and had a playful remark when Foles appeared on screen.
“Nick, I don’t hate you. I’m envious of you! You managed to catch it, and I didn’t,” Brady joked.
Brady was referring to two specific plays from Super Bowl 52: one success for Foles and the Eagles, and another disappointment for the Patriots and their former quarterback.
In the early part of the second quarter during the 2018 Super Bowl, the Patriots attempted a trick play where wide receiver Danny Amendola tried to pass to Brady, who had run a wheel route after getting a handoff. Amendola’s pass was well-aimed, but Brady couldn’t hold onto the ball on a crucial third down.
Shortly after that moment, the Eagles executed the iconic “Philly Special” that is now etched in Super Bowl lore.
Before this play, Foles feigned communication with his offensive line while center Jason Kelce snapped the ball directly to running back Corey Clement. Clement then pitched it to tight end Trey Burton, who rolled out and threw a pass to Foles, who had cleverly run a route into the end zone. Foles successfully caught the pass for a touchdown, increasing Philadelphia’s lead.
Foles and the Eagles ultimately triumphed over Brady and the Patriots with a score of 41-33 in Super Bowl 52, earning Foles the MVP title for the game.
