Tommy DeVito Takes the Helm as Giants’ Starting Quarterback Following Daniel Jones’ Bench Decision

Giants QB Depth Overview: Tommy DeVito Steps In After Daniel Jones Benched

After just 16 games into a four-year, $160 million contract, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been sidelined.

The former first-round draft choice has led the Giants to a dismal 2-8 record in 2024 — tied for the worst in the league — and a total of 3-13 since signing his recent extension. A loss in Week 10 against the Carolina Panthers in Germany, just before a Week 11 break, marked the final straw for both Jones and the Giants.

Currently, the Giants are poised to potentially draft a new franchise quarterback with a high pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft and have the option to move on from Jones after this season.

However, it’s worth noting that Jones’ contract includes an injury guarantee for the 2025 season. This means a large portion of his salary for next year could become guaranteed if he sustains a football-related injury prior to his release. This might have influenced the decision to bench him for the remaining seven games of 2024.

Here’s a look at who else the Giants may start at quarterback for the rest of the season:

Giants Quarterback Depth Chart

The Giants have two other quarterbacks on their 2024 roster, aside from Jones.

  1. Tommy DeVito
  2. Drew Lock
  3. Daniel Jones (benched)

Taking over as the starter is 26-year-old Tommy DeVito, who came to the Giants as an undrafted free agent last season. Due to injuries affecting both Jones and former backup Tyrod Taylor, the Illinois native made his NFL debut in Week 8 against the New York Jets. He played in eight more games, starting six, with a record of 3-3, which includes a three-game winning streak against the Commanders, Patriots, and Packers.

DeVito has achieved a 64% completion rate with 1,101 passing yards, eight touchdown passes, and three interceptions. He hasn’t participated in any games for the Giants this year yet.

Remaining with the Giants as a backup quarterback is Drew Lock, who signed a one-year, $5 million contract before the 2024 season. Lock previously played for the Denver Broncos from 2019 to 2021 and was traded to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the deal for Russell Wilson.

Before the 2024 season, Lock had made 23 career starts, with 21 of those being with Denver. His record stands at 9-14, with a completion rate of 59.4%, throwing for 5,289 yards, 28 touchdown passes, and 23 interceptions. According to head coach Brian Daboll, Lock will be the second-string quarterback moving forward, not Jones.
