Top 10 Family Vacation Destinations for Fall 2024, as Recommended by Travelers and Experts
Are you planning a trip this fall? That’s a fantastic idea! Autumn is often a shoulder season in many locations, leading to lower costs and better options. According to the Expedia Fall Travel Outlook, airfare typically decreases by about 10% in the fall compared to summer prices. Plus, the fall season brings enjoyable weather in many areas, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Even if your children have returned to school and your schedule is tight, plenty of wonderful options for weekend getaways are available, particularly with several long weekends coming up in September, October, and November. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite family vacation spots, as well as dream destinations that offer everything you need for an amazing fall getaway.
1. Park City, Utah
Although Park City is famously known for skiing, it’s also a stunning fall destination. The aspens, oaks, and other trees light up with vibrant fall colors, complementing the numerous hiking and mountain biking trails that allow you to appreciate this beautiful foliage. If you’re in the mood for something more relaxing, local ski resorts provide scenic chairlift rides that let you soak in the autumn.
“Fall is my favorite season, especially in a stunning place like Park City,” shares Chanda McConnell, owner of Utah’s Vidas Wax Works, known for its unique candles available online and at local farmers markets. “Walking along Main Street is delightful, with unique local shops at every corner. My kids always rush to Java Cow for their ice cream fix. If you’re in town in September, be sure to check out the Park Silly market on Sundays. It’s a great opportunity to meet local artisans while enjoying the crisp weather.”
On Main Street, kids can try their hand at being a silver miner through interactive exhibits at the Park City Museum. A guided tour of Utah Olympic Park is also a must, where you could stand atop a Nordic ski jump and learn about the sport from a former Olympian.
Accommodation recommendation: For a luxurious retreat, consider staying at The St. Regis Deer Valley. You won’t be disappointed as they offer daily guided hikes to discover the stunning surroundings and a charming champagne sabering ceremony at dusk. Children will love roasting s’mores by the firepit and riding on the funicular, the only one at a North American ski resort.
2. Williamsburg, Virginia
As an enthusiastic alumnus of William & Mary, I have a cherished fondness for Williamsburg, Virginia. This destination holds a top spot among family vacation choices across the U.S., particularly in the fall when you can explore Colonial Williamsburg amidst the beautiful autumn foliage. The mild temperatures in fall are much more enjoyable for engaging conversations with interpreters and discovering 18th-century American history compared to the scorching summer heat.
There’s an abundance of history to explore here, but the ghost tours organized during the spooky season are a thrilling option, along with visits to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, where Howl-O-Scream features haunted houses for older guests while The Count’s Spooktacular in the Sesame Street section caters to younger kids seeking fun frights. Don’t miss the Williamsburg Farmers Market for local goodies from fresh produce to baked items, or enjoy a round of golf while soaking in the autumn views along the Colonial Parkway. Finally, make sure to enjoy a family dinner at one of the Colonial Williamsburg taverns for a truly immersive experience.
Accommodation recommendation: Two excellent options within the Colonial Williamsburg Resorts collection offer proximity to historic attractions. The stylish Williamsburg Inn boasts amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, fitness center, and priority seating at Colonial Williamsburg restaurants. Alternatively, you can stay in standalone Colonial Houses, accommodating families comfortably.

3. Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida
With less hustle and bustle, more affordable rates, and cooler temperatures, autumn is a perfect time to visit Destin-Fort Walton Beach in Florida. “Fall is excellent [and] Northwest Florida offers the best weather compared to the rest of Florida,” comments Capri Mungeam, co-owner of Beach Sand Sculptures alongside her husband Rick, a master sand sculptor.
This Florida Panhandle spot has put together a list of 27 “bite-sized” activities ideal for kids aged three to over 13, from fishing trips and kayaking to snorkeling and sandcastle-building lessons with Beach Sand Sculptures. “Sandcastle lessons are truly about family bonding,” Mungeam explains. “It may be the first time grandparents, parents, and children come together to be playful and learn as a group.”
Animal enthusiasts can take a dolphin-watching excursion in the Gulf of Mexico to look for these playful creatures or walk along the pristine beaches to check for nesting sea turtles. Fall festivities include the Destin Seafood Festival showcasing the finest seafood from local eateries, and the Destin Fishing Rodeo occurring throughout October in this area known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.”
Where to stay: At Henderson Beach Resort, accommodation ranges from basic guest rooms to vacation rentals with up to three bedrooms. This location offers a variety of activities and amenities, including a private beach, pools, a lazy river, free bike rentals, lawn games, and a spa providing treatments for teens, children, and adults alike.
4. San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio offers countless thrills at venues like Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s only theme park designed for individuals with special needs. Furthermore, simpler pleasures await at Hemisfair, an urban park established on the original site of the 1968 World’s Fair that boasts an inclusive playground, splash pad, games plaza, and additional spaces for recreation and socializing.
Visit the famous Alamo to explore over 400 artifacts from musician Phil Collins’ personal collection. Then, dive deeper into the city’s rich history with The Saga, a light display and historical narrative projected onto the San Fernando Cathedral from Tuesday to Sunday evenings. The San Antonio Botanical Garden, San Antonio Zoo, and the DoSeum children’s museum are also fantastic places to spend your time.
“San Antonio really shines in the autumn, as temperatures drop,” shares Jennifer Barger, an experienced travel writer who grew up in the area and runs a travel-centric Substack called The Souvenirist. “A significant Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebration takes place, characterized more by fun than fright, complete with a float parade on the San Antonio River and family-friendly activities in La Villita. Families also gather at the Historic Market Square to enjoy enchiladas and delightful sweets from the long-standing Mi Tierra. If you tip the wandering mariachi musicians, they may even dedicate a song to you.”
Where to stay: Opt for Hotel Contessa, an all-suite property for convenient access to the San Antonio RiverWalk and other attractions. The hotel features a rooftop pool for relaxation, and the on-site Ambler restaurant serves tacos, brisket, and various Texas-style dishes.
5. Colorado Springs, Colorado
If you’re still filled with the excitement from the 2024 Summer Olympics, consider a fall trip to Colorado Springs. Known as “Olympic City USA,” it is home to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum, where interactive displays and artifacts narrate the journeys and victories of some of America’s finest athletes. You can even test your skills in speed, aim, and balance to see if you have what it takes for the Games.
Autumn leaves are often vibrant in Colorado during this season.

7. Lake Superior Scenic Byway, Wisconsin
Embark on a fall road trip along Wisconsin’s Lake Superior Scenic Byway, which hugs the southern shore of Lake Superior on the Bayfield Peninsula.
