Small Plane Crashes in West Texas Mobile Home Park, Resulting in 2 Deaths and Destruction of Homes
A woman was taken to the hospital after being rescued from a mobile home engulfed in flames following the crash that devastated an entire block. The two individuals aboard the plane did not survive.
On Tuesday morning, a plane crashed in an alleyway in west Texas, resulting in the deaths of two people onboard and injuring others while destroying several mobile homes.
The incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. in Odessa, igniting multiple structural fires, as reported by Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis. Firefighters were able to save a woman from a burning mobile home, and she was subsequently transported to a hospital.
“Witnesses reported seeing the plane struggling to gain altitude and hitting power lines before crashing in the alley,” Griffis explained to reporters. “This was followed by a significant fire and some explosions.”
According to witnesses, the plane appeared to be maneuvering away from homes prior to the crash, suggesting that the pilot made efforts to avoid residential areas, Griffis added.
The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the crash’s cause.
Significant Block Damage
According to Odessa Fire Chief Jason Cotton, the small aircraft traveled nearly an entire block before crashing.
Many vehicles, businesses, and structures, as well as backyards, were damaged, with fire crews managing to contain the fire.
The aircraft involved was a Cessna Citation business jet, which took off from Odessa-Schlemeyer Field Airport prior to crashing into the mobile home park, the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed.
The NTSB along with the FAA will look into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
