FC Cincinnati’s Marco Angulo passes away at 22 due to injuries from October accident
Marco Angulo, a player in Major League Soccer and defender for FC Cincinnati, tragically passed away on Monday evening due to injuries sustained in a car crash in Ecuador last month that also took the lives of two others. He was just 22 years old.
On October 7, Angulo was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a metal barrier while traveling on a highway in Ecuador. Reports from the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo indicated that Angulo suffered critical head trauma and a lung injury.
This season, Angulo was on loan from FC Cincinnati to the Ecuadorian team LDU Quito. He also represented the Ecuadorian national team during his career.
“We are filled with sorrow as we announce the passing of our beloved Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito shared late Monday night via social media. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His loss is a profound one that will forever leave a mark on our hearts.”
The Ecuadorian Football Association remarked that Angulo “represented our country with pride at every given moment. He was not only a remarkable player but also an incredible teammate. His absence will leave us with great sorrow.”
In a statement released Tuesday, FC Cincinnati expressed their devastation over Angulo’s passing, highlighting him as a husband, father, brother, son, friend, and teammate. “He was a vibrant and kind young man who illuminated every space he occupied,” the statement read.
Major League Soccer also issued their condolences on Tuesday, extending their heartfelt sympathy to Angulo’s “wife and son, along with his entire family, friends, teammates, and the broader soccer community.”
