Five people, including a child, die in plane crash near North Carolina’s Wright Brothers memorial

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the plane try to land before it went down and ignited.

A tragic accident occurred in North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of five individuals aboard a single-engine aircraft while it was attempting to land, as reported by officials.

The incident took place on Saturday around 5:55 p.m. local time when a Cirrus SR22 aircraft crashed near the First Flight Airport at the Wright Brothers National Memorial, according to a statement from the National Transportation Safety Board to YSL News. This airport is situated in Kill Devil Hills on the North Carolina coastline, approximately 90 miles south of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The plane erupted in flames and came to rest in a wooded section of the airport, according to the National Park Service.

Mike Barber, a representative from the National Parks Service, confirmed to YSL News that there were four adults and one child on board. The Federal Aviation Administration initially reported that only four individuals were present on the flight.

Sadly, there were no survivors, Barber stated.

Witness accounts revealed that the aircraft was making an attempt to land just prior to the crash, as noted by the National Park Service.

The FAA, along with the National Transportation Safety Board, is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

When will the First Flight Airport be reopened?

The park and the airport are scheduled to resume operations at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The airport was shut down on Saturday evening following the accident, according to a local report from CBS 17.

Both the park and the airport were closed on Sunday and will remain closed on Monday as a result of the incident, according to the National Park Service.
