‘Days of Our Lives’ star Drake Hogestyn, famed for his role as John Black, dies at 70
Drake Hogestyn, a prominent figure on the enduring soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” has died at the age of 70.
His family announced on the show’s verified Instagram account that Hogestyn, who portrayed John Black for almost four decades, had been battling pancreatic cancer.
“We are saddened to share the news of Drake Hogestyn’s passing,” the message stated. “He faced his pancreatic cancer diagnosis like a true warrior, showing immense strength and resilience. After an extraordinary battle, he left this world peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. He was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, and actor.
“He cherished performing for the ‘Days’ audience and valued the opportunity to work alongside the finest cast, crew, and production team in the industry. Our love for him is immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed every day.”
Drake Hogestyn was set to celebrate his 71st birthday on Sunday. YSL News has reached out for further details.
Alison Sweeney, known for her role as Sami Brady, honored him on X, referring to him as “an incredible man.” She wrote, “He had humor, generosity, and was very considerate. He paid attention to every scene and every person. His love for ‘Days,’ the fans, and his passion for the show were evident to everyone on set. I will deeply miss him and cherish all our moments, stories, jokes, and hugs.”
Kristian Alfonso (Hope Brady) remembered him fondly, describing him as “an incredible and passionate human being, generous and immensely kind,” and concluded her tribute with, “Thank you, Drake, for the love you brought us every day on set and beyond; you will always be our hero.”
Hogestyn was originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and started off his career playing minor league baseball until injuries ended that chapter. He made his debut on “Days of Our Lives” in 1986, portraying John Black, who had multiple roles including police officer, private investigator, and secret agent, alongside his on-screen love interest, Marlena Evans (played by Deidre Hall).
The accomplished actor won the Soap Opera Digest awards for Hottest Male Actor twice and remained with the NBC and Peacock soap until his passing, taking a short break during the 2000s. He also featured in the ‘80s series “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and guest-starred on shows like “Otherworld” and “Criminal Minds.” His most recent role was in the 2020 Hallmark movie “Christmas Tree Lane.”
