Al Roker and ‘West Wing’ colleagues honor John Amos: ‘This one hits different’

The entertainment industry is grieving the loss of the groundbreaking actor John Amos.

The actor, recognized for his work in “Good Times” and “Roots,” passed away on August 21 at 84, as confirmed by his representative on Tuesday. This news prompted a wave of heartfelt tributes.

“This one hits differently,” expressed Martin Lawrence, a star from “Bad Boys,” on X. “I send my condolences to the family of a real legend, John Amos.”

John Amos gained fame for his role as the older Kunta Kinte in the iconic miniseries “Roots” and as James Evans Sr. in the celebrated CBS sitcom “Good Times.” He left the latter show due to disagreements regarding the depiction of Black characters.

His impressive career also included memorable performances as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on NBC’s “The West Wing,” weatherman Gordy Howard on CBS’ “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and Cleo McDowell in the movie “Coming to America.”

Joshua Malina, Amos’ former co-star on “The West Wing,” reminisced in an Instagram story about watching “Good Times” growing up and expressed that it was a “thrill” to work with Amos. “A fantastic person and a consummate professional,” Malina wrote. “Rest in peace.”

“A remarkable actor,” Bradley Whitford from “The West Wing” echoed on X. “A stellar career. Rest in peace, John. Well done.”

Wendell Pierce from “The Wire” connected this loss to the recent death of James Earl Jones, calling both “titans” of theater and cinema. “I had the privilege of witnessing their immense talent,” Pierce noted on X. “I will always be grateful to them.”

Al Roker, a weatherman for the “Today” show, reflected on Instagram, saying that Amos “brought dignity, grace, and authenticity to his roles.”

“I remember him as Gordy the Weatherman on WJM when I was just beginning my career as a TV meteorologist in 1974, and I saw him as a role model,” Roker shared. “His decision to leave ‘Good Times’ earned him respect for taking a stand. His presence will be missed.”

Jimmie Walker, Amos’ colleague from “Good Times,” also expressed his sorrow to People magazine, calling him a “great actor” and extending condolences to his family, friends, and countless fans.

In a statement sent to YSL News on Tuesday, Amos’ son, Kelly Christopher Amos, reminisced about his father as “a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold,” adding that “he was cherished all over the world.”
