Trinity Rodman Opens Up About Her Unique Bond with Father Dennis: ‘He’s More Than Just a Dad’

USWNT forward Trinity Rodman talks about her relationship with Dennis Rodman: ‘He’s not a father’

Trinity Rodman, a standout player for the U.S. women’s national soccer team, shared insights into her relationship with her father, Dennis Rodman, the Basketball Hall of Famer, criticizing him for his lack of presence in her life.

During an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast published on Wednesday, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist described her father’s unpredictable behavior as a factor throughout her childhood and even today. Trinity, who plays for Washington Spirit and has previously termed her relationship with her father as difficult, stated that the five-time NBA champ would only see them a few times annually while trying to impose control over their lives.

“He’s not a dad. He may be related by blood, but that’s about it,” the 22-year-old said, reflecting on one of the sporting world’s most recognized figures from the 1990s. “We were barely scraping by to pay for rent. I honestly don’t know how we managed at times, but somehow we made it work.”

Here’s a summary of Trinity Rodman’s reflections on her father.

Trinity Rodman: ‘At times, we were living in our car’

Dennis Rodman earned a reputation as one of the NBA’s biggest stars, contributing significantly to the Chicago Bulls’ success during their championship runs with Michael Jordan. Renowned for his rebounding skills—he topped the league for seven consecutive seasons—and his flamboyant persona, “The Worm” enjoyed substantial contracts, endorsements, and even ventured into acting.

However, according to Trinity, the wealth he accumulated didn’t benefit his children.

“We had a Ford Expedition, and we actually lived in that for a while,” Trinity recounted. “I remember being in Newport Harbor during that time. Imagine having to live in a car while attending a wealthy school. It was bizarre, but we managed to stay in a motel occasionally. We were always calculating how many nights we could afford.”

She revealed that throughout the years, her father would show up “once, twice, three or four times a year,” and those visits often sparked disputes about whether he was sufficiently supporting the family.

“The only issue my parents ever fought over in front of us was money and providing for the kids,” the 2024 NWSL Best 11 forward clarified. “My dad likes to be in control. He would take us out shopping, buy phones, and so on. He’d say, ‘I’ll take you and your brother shopping,’ and we often didn’t want to go. All we really wanted was some cash to grab In-N-Out after school with our friends. It was frustrating because he wouldn’t give us money for that.

“He insisted on controlling the situation, swiping his card while taking us shopping. But when we asked for $100 to get food or to get my ears pierced at Claire’s, he’d refuse, saying, ‘You’re just trying to use me.’

Trinity Rodman on Dennis Rodman: ‘I really don’t know where he is’

For Trinity, being Dennis Rodman’s daughter has been a complex experience. She has attended games for the Washington Spirit wearing shirts that evoke some of her father’s most iconic looks, but she also mentioned that she has to carefully consider what to say whenever he is brought up in conversation.

“In terms of discussing my dad, I feel that me and my brother have been quite generous and understanding in how we’ve talked about it,” Trinity noted. “We always aim to avoid making him seem bad, even though it means holding back a lot of our feelings and experiences, including trauma we’ve faced.

“In interviews, people often ask, ‘Is your dad around? How does he feel?’ I try to express that I don’t know. I truly have no idea how he feels or where he is. It frustrates me to have to answer those questions for my own peace of mind.”
