‘Save TikTok’: Donald Trump announces plan to delay TikTok ban with executive order
WASHINGTON − President-elect Donald Trump intends to sign an executive order on Monday afternoon, just hours after beginning his second term, to temporarily pause a ban on the widely-used video app TikTok.
On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld a law enacted by Congress mandating that ByteDance, the China-based parent company of TikTok, must either sell its U.S. operations or shut them down. By Saturday evening, American users attempting to access the app encountered a pop-up message stating, “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now.”
However, in a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump stated that his order will “extend the time before the law’s restrictions are enacted, allowing us to negotiate a deal that safeguards our national security.”
The president-elect indicated he would support “a joint venture involving the current or new owners, granting the U.S. a 50% share,” but did not clarify whether this would include ByteDance, TikTok’s current parent company based in Beijing.
“Americans deserve to witness our thrilling Inauguration on Monday, along with other events and discussions,” Trump remarked.
During his first term, Trump advocated for banning TikTok, but lately he has shifted his stance, posting “SAVE TIKTOK!” earlier on Sunday.
TikTok and social media, in general, have played a significant role in bolstering Trump’s 2024 reelection efforts. Following the suggestion of his 18-year-old son, Barron Trump, the Republican president-elect engaged with young, especially male voters through online platforms.
If Trump follows through with this executive order on Monday, the existing TikTok restrictions will have been in place for less than 48 hours. Trump did not clarify on Sunday how long he intends the extension to last, but he mentioned to NBC’s Kristen Welker on Saturday that he would “most likely” grant a 90-day delay.
