Opinion: Trump is not Mussolini. The liberal fixation on fascism reveals their misunderstanding.
The nearly 73 million Americans, myself included, who cast their votes for Donald Trump did not do so to endorse a ‘fascist.’ Instead, we rejected impractical progressive ideas.
One challenge regarding Donald Trump winning re-election is that we, the nearly 73 million Americans who supported the Republican nominee, must prepare for four years filled with fearmongering, derision, and threats.
For years, I have been warned that if Trump were to win, he would dismantle democracy and imprison journalists and political opponents in gulags. Some celebrities and affluent individuals have even announced their intentions to relocate abroad.
If that were true, America would indeed be a dreadful place to live, and the independent journalism that sustains me could disappear at any moment. So please, feel free to express your shock as you read this. I’d appreciate it.
Will Trump confine journalists in gulags?
Concerns about this are partly stemming from the president-elect’s own incendiary language. Trump has labeled the news media as “the enemy of the people” and stated that NBC News “should face investigation for treason.” His chief legal advocate, Mike Davis, has suggested he would imprison journalists in gulags, later claiming he was merely joking.
Those were undoubtedly foolish remarks from Trump and his team. However, we should recognize by now that he often doesn’t adhere to his statements literally. Often, he speaks without sincerity.
While Trump’s words can be incendiary, he rarely follows through on his threats. Still, he was elected to address specific issues, and it won’t be long before Americans start questioning whether he was just making empty promises when he spoke of extending tax breaks and securing the border.
Yet I must emphasize: Why was it that when Trump advocated for lower taxes, a secure border, orderly immigration, peaceful foreign relations, and a robust economy, much of the established media and Democrats dismissed him?
Then, when Trump makes a foolish comment about media bias or seeking retribution against political adversaries, those remarks are treated as solemn commitments?
Media outlets have seized upon Trump’s comments and spun their own narratives. A Politico headline recently stated, “Trump vowed revenge. Here’s who he’s targeting.” Meanwhile, a Freedom of the Press Foundation headline urged, “Limit Trump’s power to damage the press − before it’s too late.”
For journalists and others to propagate the belief that Trump will silence his
Those who hold intense disdain for Trump and his supporters often do not regard them as worthy of respect. Similar to President Joe Biden, they sometimes see their fellow citizens as “garbage.” This notion echoes the sentiments of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who labeled Republican voters as “deplorable.”
Labeling Trump and his supporters as fascists not only reveals ignorance but also hides a deep-seated disdain that progressives try to mask with a facade of fear and anger.
In reality, Trump’s election does not signal an impending rise of fascism, the establishment of gulags, or a catastrophic downfall. Instead, it signifies a shift away from the belief that far-left ideologies are viable solutions to the issues facing America.
