Trump and Zelenskyy Discuss Ukraine’s Uncertain Future Following Election
WASHINGTON − On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he had a conversation with President-elect Donald Trump, congratulating him on his significant election victory. Zelenskyy is eager to secure ongoing U.S. support amid Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy shared on X that he had a “fantastic call” with Trump and celebrated his “historic landslide victory,” attributing this success to “his incredible campaign.”
“I commended his family and team for their outstanding efforts,” Zelenskyy noted. “We agreed to keep a strong dialogue going and enhance our partnership. Robust and consistent U.S. leadership is crucial for global stability and for achieving a fair peace.”
Over the past two and a half years, the Biden administration has invested billions in military assistance to Ukraine following the invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the future of U.S. aid to Ukraine is uncertain with Trump’s election, as he has previously made positive remarks about Putin and hesitated to declare support for Ukraine during a September debate.
“I want this war to end,” Trump stated, claiming he will resolve the conflict before his inauguration on January 20, but did not provide specific details on how he plans to do so.
During his campaign, Trump accused Zelenskyy of favoritism concerning the U.S. elections and criticized military funding for Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Vice President-elect JD Vance opposed funding for Ukraine during his time in the Senate.
A notable phone call in 2019 between Trump and Zelenskyy, where Trump suggested withholding U.S. aid unless Ukraine investigated Joe Biden and his son Hunter, resulted in Trump’s first impeachment.
Trump and Zelenskyy previously met in New York in September, a day after Zelenskyy met with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, in Washington.
