Donald Trump Meets with Republicans in Florida; Cabinet Nominations Progress: Live Updates
President Donald Trump is hosting a gathering for House Republicans at his Miami golf club on Monday, marking the start of their GOP retreat.
Key topics at this gathering will revolve around immigration and issues related to the southern border. The Trump administration announced on Sunday that it would not impose extensive tariffs and sanctions on Colombia, following an agreement from Colombian President Gustavo Petro to allow U.S. military planes to repatriate Colombian migrants.
This week, Trump is also focused on securing confirmations for his Cabinet appointments. The Senate is anticipated to confirm Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary in a bipartisan vote on Monday, followed by a vote on Tuesday for Transportation Secretary nominee Sean Duffy.
Later in the week, several of Trump’s more controversial nominees will undergo scrutiny during committee confirmation hearings. Candidates include Tulsi Gabbard, RFK Jr., and Kash Patel.

What’s on President Trump’s agenda for today?
On Monday afternoon, President Trump will deliver a speech at a House Republican conference in Miami, part of a three-day retreat aimed at resolving internal party disputes regarding the funding of extensive tax cuts while also making significant cuts to federal spending.
Last year, Trump campaigned for a second presidential term, proposing $6 trillion in tax cuts over the next decade. Extending his 2017 tax cuts alone—allowing them to remain in effect rather than expire at the year’s end—is expected to cost $4 trillion.
Additionally, Trump has suggested removing taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits, which could result in another $1.8 trillion expense over a decade, according to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. During a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, he reiterated his 2024 campaign promise regarding tips.
To finance these tax reductions, one of Trump’s propositions involves implementing a 10% tariff on imported goods, which could generate $1.9 trillion. However, some conservative members oppose raising tariffs.
The Republicans hold a slim majority in the House, with 218 votes to 215. Therefore, achieving party unity will be crucial for addressing contentious topics over the next two years. If they can align on budgetary issues, they may set tax and spending priorities without needing Democratic support.
Which Trump Cabinet officials have been confirmed so far?
Currently, four of Trump’s nominees have received confirmation: Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, and John Ratcliffe as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Noem was confirmed through a bipartisan vote of 59-34 on Saturday, with seven Democrats joining Republicans to back her nomination.
Hegseth’s confirmation as defense secretary came with a narrow 51-50 vote on Friday night, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote amidst allegations regarding his past conduct.
Ratcliffe and Rubio had smoother sailing through the Senate, being confirmed with votes of 74-25 and 99-0 respectively.
