Trump Poised to Grant TikTok a 90-Day Breather Ahead of Potential Ban, NBC News Reveals

Trump Likely to Grant TikTok a 90-Day Delay Before Ban Begins, NBC News Reports

On Saturday, TikTok users received encouraging news from President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump mentioned in an interview with NBC News that he is expected to offer TikTok a 90-day delay on a potential ban after he assumes office on Monday.

The widely-used video sharing platform TikTok, which has 170 million users in the U.S., may face a ban due to a bill that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in April 2024. This legislation raised alarms regarding the national security risks posed by the Chinese-owned app. In order to continue operating in the U.S., TikTok must sell its American division, as mandated by the bill.

After the Supreme Court rejected ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company based in Beijing, in its claim that a ban would violate users’ free speech rights, TikTok warned on Friday that it might “go dark” on Sunday unless the Biden administration and the Justice Department clarified that the ban would not be implemented starting then.

The Biden administration has indicated it does not intend to enforce the ban, while Trump has expressed interest in exploring options to keep TikTok active, potentially looking for a buyer or someone to oversee TikTok’s U.S. operations.

A 90-day delay on the implementation of the ban would provide the Trump administration with the opportunity to seek a resolution. “I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at,” Trump stated during his phone interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” anchor Kristen Welker on Saturday. “The 90-day extension is something that will most likely happen, as it makes sense. We need to review this carefully; it’s a significant issue.”

“If I decide to proceed with that, I will likely announce it on Monday,” Trump informed Welker.

TikTok Ban: Uncertainties Persist Despite Biden Administration’s Stance

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described TikTok’s Friday night statement requesting clarity from the Biden administration as “a stunt.”

“We see no need for TikTok or other companies to make moves in the upcoming days before the Trump administration takes over on Monday,” she commented on Saturday. “Our position has been clearly and openly stated: the actions needed to enforce this law will be the responsibility of the next administration. So TikTok and other companies should address any concerns with them.”
