Donald Trump Criticizes ABC News, Uncertain About Sept. 10 Debate Participation

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about his involvement in the upcoming presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Why would I engage in a Debate with Kamala Harris on that network?” Trump questioned in a post on Truth Social, referring to an interview of Tom Cotton by Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week” and criticizing the panel of commentators on the show.

The debate, set to take place on September 10, will be hosted by ABC News. This is the only debate agreed upon by both candidates before the November Election Day. Negotiations have been tense, with Trump proposing a debate on September 4, organized by Fox News, which the Harris camp has not accepted.

Trump specifically targeted former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile, who drew criticism in 2016 for allegedly providing debate questions to Hillary Clinton’s campaign through leaked emails. He also suggested that Harris has close ties with ABC, implying a connection to Dana Walden.

Walden, a Disney executive, is known to have a long-standing friendship with Harris, but ABC has clarified that her role is limited to corporate and financial matters.

Jason Miller, a senior aide from the Trump campaign, stated on Monday that there remain disagreements between the Democratic and Republican teams regarding the debate rules, such as seating arrangements and the use of notes.

In response, the Harris campaign refuted Miller’s statement. Brian Fallon, a senior communications advisor for Harris, argued that both candidates’ microphones should remain active throughout the entire broadcast, noting Trump’s tendency to interrupt opponents during debates.

Will there be additional debates besides the one on September 10?

The Harris campaign has agreed to a second debate, although details regarding the timing and location are still unclear. Earlier this month, they announced, “The debate about debates is settled. Donald Trump’s campaign has accepted our proposal for three debates—two presidential and one vice-presidential debate.”

“Provided that Donald Trump actually attends the debate on September 10, Governor Walz will have the opportunity to face JD Vance on October 1, and the American people can witness another debate featuring Vice President Harris and Donald Trump in October,” the campaign added.

The running mates for Trump and Harris—Senator JD Vance from Ohio and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz—have both consented to an October 1 debate, which will be covered by CBS News.
