Trump’s First Day Actions: Dismantling the Electric Vehicle Mandate and Declaring an ‘Energy Emergency’

Day 1 Orders: Trump to End ‘Electric Vehicle Mandate’ and Declare ‘Energy Emergency’

WASHINGTON ― President-elect Donald Trump is set to announce a “national energy emergency” shortly after his inauguration. This move is part of a series of executive actions intended to fulfill his long-standing commitment to ramp up fossil fuel production in the U.S., according to future White House officials.

The planned orders include the abolition of the so-called “electric vehicle mandate.” This term refers to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation that requires auto manufacturers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in new light- and medium-duty vehicles starting in 2027.

According to the EPA, this regulation would mandate that by 2032, auto manufacturers produce electric vehicles comprising approximately 30% to 56% of all new light-duty vehicles and about 20% to 32% of new medium-duty vehicles.

By declaring a national energy emergency, Trump aims to prioritize the increase of domestic oil production and other fossil fuel sources, as U.S. crude oil production reached a historical peak in the past year.

Another expected executive order from Trump will authorize drilling in select regions of Alaska, in response to Biden’s measures that restricted oil and gas drilling and mining in that state. The specific details regarding the Alaska drilling initiative are not yet specified.

Trump has also expressed his intention to reverse Biden’s recent ban on offshore drilling along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, although it remains unclear if this action will be included in his Day 1 plans.

Additional steps to be taken focus on “eliminating bureaucratic obstacles and regulations that have been hindering economic progress,” officials noted. However, the specific regulations Trump intends to address through executive actions have not been disclosed.

In line with his campaign promise to reduce consumer costs, Trump will also issue a presidential memorandum addressing inflation. Incoming officials have indicated this will initiate a comprehensive governmental strategy aimed at reducing consumer prices.
