Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill held by police shortly before season opener

Tyreek Hill, a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, was detained by law enforcement just prior to Sunday’s match against the Jacksonville Jaguars near Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Fans driving by filmed Hill lying face down on the street as police placed him in handcuffs; the video quickly spread across the internet before kickoff.

“Earlier today, WR Tyreek Hill was stopped for a traffic issue about a block from the stadium and was briefly detained by authorities. He has since been released. Several teammates witnessed the event and came to provide support,” stated the Dolphins.

“Tyreek and all the other players involved have safely reached the stadium and will be participating in today’s game.”

According to Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, the athlete was “upset” about the incident.

“It’s a tragic situation,” Rosenhaus remarked during a conversation with ESPN’s Jeff Darlington. “I really care for Tyreek and didn’t like seeing him in that predicament with the police. He will play today. First and foremost, he is alright. Secondly, he will play. And third, it appears he received a ticket for a driving offense while approaching the stadium. I find it perplexing how this escalated into the situation of being restrained and held on the ground. I’m very concerned and troubled by that. We will look into this, but I won’t make any claims at this moment. The most important aspect is that Tyreek is physically okay – he was very shaken up by what took place.

“This is unbelievable; I’ve never witnessed anything like it.”

Reports from ESPN indicate that Hill engaged in a “verbal dispute” with an officer and was cited for reckless driving.

Miami-Dade Police Department head Stephanie V. Daniels issued a statement on social media regarding Hill’s detainment shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday:

“We are aware of the detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department. I have called for an immediate investigation into all circumstances surrounding this incident, and we are reviewing available body camera footage. Updates will be provided as more information becomes accessible.”

Hill, who won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, led the NFL last season with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns while playing for the Dolphins.

Entering his third year with Miami, Hill recently signed a contract extension worth $90 million over the next three seasons, which includes $65 million guaranteed. He had initially signed a four-year, $120 million contract with the Dolphins in 2022 after being traded by the Chiefs, with $72.2 million guaranteed.
