Tyson Foods is shutting down its processing plant in Kansas, adding to its recent plant closures
Tyson Foods has revealed that yet another of its plants will be closing.
On Monday, the company disclosed its plans to close the Emporia, Kansas facility by February 2025.
More than 800 workers at the plant received a notification regarding the closure.
“After weighing our options and considering the impact of this challenging decision, Tyson Foods is sad to announce that it will permanently cease all operations at the Emporia, Kansas facility,” stated Ernesto Sanchez, vice president of operations for beef and pork, in a letter obtained by the Topeka Capital-Journal, part of the YSL News Network.
A WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice from Kansasworks, released on Monday, indicated that 809 employees at the Emporia plant are affected by this closure. This notice is mandated by federal law to alert workers ahead of a plant closing or significant layoffs, giving them and their families time to plan for the transition.
The letter further specified that the anticipated closing date is around February 14, 2025.
“We are also collaborating closely with state and local authorities to offer additional support to those impacted,” a spokesperson for Tyson Foods told The Capital-Journal.
“Our main focus is caring for our team members, and we encourage them to consider applying for any open positions within the company,” added the spokesperson.
YSL News has reached out to Tyson Foods for further comments.
Recent Tyson Foods plant closures since 2023
The upcoming closure of the Kansas plant follows a series of Tyson facility shutdowns in recent years.
In 2023, Tyson Foods announced the closure of plants located in Indiana, Virginia, and two each in Arkansas and Missouri, as previously reported by YSL News.
Additionally, in March 2024, Tyson declared it would halt operations at its pork-packing plant in Perry, Iowa. This closure was expected to leave 1,276 workers at the town’s largest employer without jobs.
