Uncovering Passion: How Steamy Lit Bookstore Celebrates Romance in Every Shade

How Steamy Lit Bookstore supports romance literature and love in its many expressions

Independent bookstores serve as essential parts of their communities. They foster culture, create jobs, generate sales tax revenue, enhance literacy, support diverse and new writers, connect readers to books on a personal level, and advocate for the freedom to read while ensuring access to books in their areas.

Each week, we shine a light on a unique independent bookstore, highlighting what sets it apart and sharing their expert book recommendations.

This week, we feature Steamy Lit Bookstore located in Deerfield Beach, Florida!

Situated in the community’s heart, Steamy Lit Bookstore isn’t merely a place for romance books—it’s a sanctuary for readers who are looking for narratives that authentically represent our diverse community. Founded by Melissa Saavedra, a Peruvian immigrant and Navy vet, Steamy Lit focuses on showcasing the voices of authors from backgrounds that have often been sidelined in the romance industry.

As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by an inviting ambiance and shelves filled with works by BIPOC authors and writers representing marginalized groups. Their dedication to inclusivity extends beyond their inventory. “We aim to unite the romance community by encouraging discussions about embracing sexuality and highlighting the work of authors who aren’t given the same marketing opportunities,” Saavedra shares.

A key feature of Steamy Lit is its charming front lounge area where community members gather. Whether reading, working, or meeting others, this cozy space reflects their mission of encouraging collaboration and conversation. It’s a perfect spot to unwind with a romance novel among fellow enthusiasts of unconventional love stories.

In a climate where safe spaces are essential, particularly in Florida where rights are being threatened, Steamy Lit commits to being a refuge for everyone.

The monthly romance book club offers an excellent opportunity to connect with other readers, and they have also recently introduced a walking audiobook club that combines love for reading with the advantages of physical activity.

For Saavedra, supporting local independent bookstores means more than purchasing books; it’s about nurturing a community that prioritizes diversity, inclusion, and representation.
