Understanding the All-Inclusive Nature of Cruises: What You Need to Know Before You Set Sail

Are cruises all-inclusive? Here’s what you should know before embarking.

The initial price of your cruise might not reflect the total cost once the journey is complete.

Sea vacations can provide good value by bundling accommodations, entertainment, and meals together. However, those new to cruising may overlook how many features, both on and off the ship, may require additional payment.

“Most cruise companies do not operate as all-inclusive,” stated RacQuelle Major-Holland, the owner of Major Adventures Travel Agency, in an interview with YSL News. She added that cruises are often “more inclusive compared to a traditional land-based vacation.”

Here’s what you need to understand.

Is a cruise ship fully all-inclusive?

Not really. While numerous amenities and activities are included in the fare, guests will probably incur charges for several others – including typical cruise experiences, such as cocktails by the pool or guided tours during stops.

Adam Duckworth, the president and founder of Travelmation, noted that you can have a fantastic trip without spending additional money after your booking.

“You can dine in the main dining room. You don’t need an alcohol package to enjoy yourself. Staying hydrated with water and having coffee can make for a pleasant experience,” he explained. “However, if you’re aiming for the offerings highlighted in advertisements or social media – what I would term upgraded specialty dining experiences – you will generally incur extra costs.”

What is typically included on a cruise?

◾ Meals at various onboard locations, including the main dining area and buffet.

◾ Beverages like non-bottled filtered water, lemonade, and regular coffee.

◾ Evening entertainment.

◾ Activities such as trivia contests and karaoke.

◾ Access to communal facilities such as the pool, hot tubs, and sports courts.

◾ Clubs for kids and teenagers.

However, services like specialty dining, shore excursions, spa treatments, and Wi-Fi usually come with an additional cost. So do sodas, specialty coffees, and alcoholic drinks – which is where drink packages become useful – and gratuities, which can be adjusted before disembarking.

Some cruise lines offer packages that allow guests to bundle various extras, which can lead to savings. Major-Holland remarked, “If you require many of those extras, you’ll likely end up spending more if you pay for them separately than if you bundle them together.” She also runs the YouTube channel MH Family Adventures.

Cruise companies may also provide discounts for pre-purchased add-ons. Passengers on Carnival Cruise Line, for example, can save up to 15% on Wi-Fi packages – even more with their Multi-Device Premium plan – when bought before they set sail.

Which cruise line is the most all-inclusive?

In general, higher-end cruise lines tend to include more in their prices.

“With more premium cruises, you’re likely to get more inclusions,” stated Major-Holland. “You’re paying for it upfront, but that means all those extras are included in your fare.”

Nonetheless, the pricing structures can vary between different companies. Duckworth emphasized that travelers should research what each cruise line provides and mentioned that travel advisors can assist in this process.

Even if guests are satisfied with the complimentary options, there’s no harm in treating yourself on vacation. “For instance, I find the dining options at Disney Cruise Line to be exceptional, and I enjoy dining in the main dining room, but every time I board, I feel compelled to dine at (Italian restaurant) Palo (or Palo Steakhouse),” Duckworth noted.

He believes the added expense is worthwhile. “There’s just something extraordinary about those premium experiences on a cruise that truly enhances your overall experience.”
