Understanding the Stock Market’s Status During the January 9 National Day of Mourning

Will the stock market be open on the national day of mourning on January 9? Here’s what you need to know

President Joe Biden has declared Thursday, January 9, as a national day of mourning in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter’s passing.

Biden has encouraged Americans to gather “in their individual places of worship” on January 9 to pay their respects to Carter.

“I invite those around the globe who share in our sorrow to participate in this solemn remembrance,” Biden stated after the announcement of Carter’s death.

He mentioned that flags will be flown at half-staff at the White House and all public venues, military bases, and naval stations, as well as on naval ships for 30 days following Carter’s death.

Historically, on national days of mourning—such as those for former Presidents George H. W. Bush in 2018 and Gerald Ford in 2006—federal offices and stock markets in the United States were closed.

Here’s what you should be aware of regarding the status of U.S. stock markets on January 9.

Will the stock market be closed on January 9?

The New York Stock Exchange will not be open for trading on Thursday, January 9.

The Nasdaq has also declared that it will suspend all U.S. equity and options trading for the day.

Bond markets will remain open but will have shortened hours, closing early at 2 p.m. ET, as suggested by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

“Jimmy Carter, who came from modest beginnings as a farmer and family man, dedicated his life to public service and advancing our freedoms,” Lynn Martin, President of NYSE Group, stated in a press release.

The last occasion the New York Stock Exchange closed for a former president’s funeral was in December 2018, in memory of former President George H. W. Bush.

Additionally, all federal offices will be closed on January 9 to commemorate Carter’s passing.
