Five Programs You Can Apply for on the Social Security Website


Social Security Public Affairs is enhancing public access to various programs and benefits. The website, SSA.gov, provides a user-friendly platform to apply for benefits online.

 

Interested in applying? Check out the options listed below:

Retirement or Spousal Benefits

To qualify, you must be at least 61 years and 9 months old and plan to have your benefits start within the next 4 months. You can apply at www.ssa.gov/retirement.

Disability Benefits

If you are 18 or older and unable to work due to a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or lead to death, you may apply for disability benefits using the online application at www.ssa.gov/disability. Please note:

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • Your medical issue must hinder your ability to work for at least 12 months.
  • You must not have had a denial of disability benefits in the last 60 days. If your application was denied recently, you can contest the decision online and ask for a review. For more information, visit www.ssa.gov/apply/appeal-decision-we-made.

 

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI gives monthly payments to people, including both adults and children, with disabilities or blindness who have limited income and few assets. Individuals aged 65 or older without disabilities and limited income may also qualify for SSI. Certain adults with disabilities who meet specific criteria can apply online. For details, visit www.ssa.gov/ssi. If you are unable to access the website, call 1-800-772-1213 to set up an appointment. Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that serves:

  • Individuals aged 65 and older.
  • Co-workers under 65 who have been receiving disability benefits for 24 months.
  • People diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), who are exempt from the two-year waiting period.
  • If you are not receiving Social Security benefits yet, it’s best to apply for Medicare up to 3 months before you turn 65 at www.ssa.gov/medicare. Even if you’re still working and have coverage through your employer’s health plan (or your spouse’s employer), consider reviewing your Medicare options.

Assistance with Medicare Prescription Drug Costs

The Extra Help program aids Medicare recipients with costs related to prescription drugs, including deductibles and copays. Those on Medicare looking for help with medication expenses can apply for Extra Help at www.ssa.gov/medicare/part-d-extra-help.
