Want a complexion as clear as glass? Expert shares K-beauty secrets
Achieving “glass skin” means having a flawless and radiant complexion. This popular beauty trend highlights skin that gleams with an almost glass-like clarity.
The concept of glass skin originated in South Korea and has set a standard for what radiant and healthy skin should look like. Over the past ten years, Korean beauty, often referred to as K-beauty, has become known for its thorough and creative skincare routines that strive to improve the skin’s natural look.
However, getting glass skin is not merely about using trendy products; it involves a thoughtful regimen that focuses on hydration, gentle exfoliation, and a carefully built skincare routine that entails layering products.
Erica Choi, co-founder of Superegg and a qualified esthetician, provides insights into achieving glass skin and cultivating a clear complexion.
What does glass skin mean?
According to Choi, glass skin is a term used to describe skin that has a “clearly glass-like appearance.” It is characterized by smoothness, evenness, and a luminous glow. This effect is often most noticeable when someone is not wearing any makeup.
Skin with glass skin has a shiny texture and appears nearly translucent, giving it the illusion of being poreless.
The glass skin trend gained significant popularity between 2017 and 2018, notes Choi.
“During this time, many media outlets and influencers began showcasing and advocating for various Korean beauty products, which helped it gain traction worldwide,” she says.
As a result, the glass skin trend rapidly grew among consumers.
“This has become a beauty goal for many people. It represents a very luminous look achieved without makeup,” Choi explains.
Steps to achieve glass skin
There are several methods to attain glass skin, according to Choi.
“The key is to personalize your approach. It can involve layering different types of products, typically lightweight ones that layer nicely without causing pilling or suffocating the skin, making it appropriate for all skin types, including oily or acne-prone,” she notes.
Choi emphasizes that there is a common misconception that only certain skin types can achieve this effect.
“Listening to your skin and being in tune with its needs on a daily basis allows you to tailor your routine effectively,” she advises.
You can achieve glass skin at any age, even if you have more mature skin, Choi asserts. “With the appropriate routine and products, this glass skin appearance can be achieved regardless of your age.”
Additionally, achieving glass skin involves more than just topical skincare. To support your skin, it’s essential to stay hydrated, get sufficient sleep, and maintain regular physical activity, Choi recommends.
“For K-beauty, this philosophy behind glass skin goes beyond just external appearance; it encompasses your overall well-being,” she explains. “It’s about adopting a lifestyle that contributes to achieving this look.”
Glass skin skincare routine
Choi suggests a “layering approach” for achieving glass skin.
Starting with a gentle cleanser, she emphasizes the importance of double cleansing at night to eliminate excess oils and any residues from the day.
“Next, I apply a toner or essence,” she shares. “These are watery products that can be easily layered.”
Following this, you can choose a serum that addresses your specific skin needs, like hydration or exfoliation, and finish your nighttime routine with a moisturizer while remembering to apply sunscreen in the morning.
“I also like to use a hydrating sheet mask a couple of times a week, adding yet another layer,” Choi mentions. “There are various methods to achieve this desired glow, and ultimately, consistency is key.
“It’s not an overnight transformation. It requires a process that involves establishing your own skincare rituals and a holistic approach to achieving healthy skin.”
When selecting products, focus on those with hydrating and plumping ingredients. Choi recommends using hyaluronic acid and glycerin as great choices. “Look for any ingredients that draw moisture into the skin,” she suggests.
Additionally, soothing and herbal components like green tea and mugwort are essential for achieving glass skin. “Cica is also a staple ingredient,” Choi further adds.
It’s important to include gentle exfoliants for maintaining skin’s turnover. Choi recommends using PHAs, LHAs, and lactic acids.
Lastly, wearing sunscreen is a crucial part of any skincare routine. “Radiant, translucent skin cannot be achieved without proper sun protection,” Choi insists.
