Unprecedented Hurricane Season: A Surge of Storms on the Horizon

More storms on the horizon as historic hurricane season continues

As this unusually harsh hurricane season in the Atlantic reaches its last month, there are new storm concerns forming in the Caribbean, according to weather experts.

This season has caused significant destruction, with estimates suggesting that Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton could collectively lead to nearly $100 billion in damages. A fresh tropical threat may emerge from the central and western Caribbean, as per AccuWeather’s analysis. Heavy rain anticipated in the Caribbean this week might trigger dangerous situations like flash floods and mudslides, independent of whether the disturbance qualifies as a tropical storm.

According to AccuWeather’s Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva, warm water temperatures in the mid-80s, which are slightly above the typical seasonal averages, can contribute to the development of storms. He mentioned that there are two potential disturbances showing a “high chance” of evolving into a tropical depression or storm in these waters as we head into early November.

“The water is quite warm right now and wind shear is predicted to be low,” DaSilva noted. “I believe something substantial will likely form.”

Fortunately, this period generally sees storms moving out to sea. However, one potential storm could make its way towards Florida and possibly reach the Carolinas, DaSilva said.

“This is definitely a possibility, but it would likely occur around Election Day, about 10 to 14 days from now,” he added. “It’s still too soon to tell, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it.”

2024 season has hit harder than any in a generation

According to Ryan Truchelut, a meteorologist with WeatherTiger and a contributor to YSL News Network, the 2024 hurricane season, which began on June 1, is notable as it marks the first time since 2005 that Florida has experienced three hurricane landfalls, two of which were Category 3 or higher. Helene and Milton were particularly unique storms, with “very few historical comparisons,” he stated.

“Simply put, we are exhausted,” Truchelut expressed. “The 2024 hurricane season has impacted us more than any in recent memory.”

Pleasant weather for trick-or-treaters in the Northeast

This Halloween, the Northeast is expected to enjoy favorable weather for trick-or-treating—warm and dry conditions. DaSilva indicated that record temperatures may be “broken or challenged” across the area, predicting highs of 78 degrees in Boston, 75 degrees in New York, and 80 degrees in Philadelphia.

“It appears that the central part of the country, including the Plains states, will experience dry conditions,” DaSilva mentioned. However, he warned that a cold front moving eastward could lead to showers and thunderstorms reaching from Ohio and Michigan down to Louisiana and Texas.

Meanwhile, the Central Plains, Rockies, and Southeast are expected to remain dry. However, a storm system affecting the Pacific Northwest might create “breezy and chilly” weather, with occasional rain showers.
