Week 13 Upsets Reshape Our College Football Coaches Poll Rankings
This week’s US LBM Coaches Poll is set for a shake-up following several significant upsets in the Big Ten and SEC.
In a key matchup, the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes overcame a touchdown deficit against No. 5 Indiana. Thanks to a notable punt return touchdown from Caleb Downs, Ohio State secured a 38-15 victory, bringing them one step closer to returning to the Big Ten Championship for the first time since 2020.
Meanwhile in the SEC, Mississippi experienced a surprising defeat to Florida, which effectively eliminates them from contention for an at-large bid to the College Football Playoff. Alabama also faced a setback, suffering a 24-3 loss to Oklahoma, putting their postseason hopes in jeopardy.
As a result of these defeats, both the Tide and Rebels are likely to drop in this week’s Top 25 rankings. The important question is, where will the Hoosiers rank? Below is our forecast for the top 10 of the Coaches Poll, which will be unveiled later today:
1. Oregon (11-0)
The Ducks are already guaranteed a spot in the Big Ten championship game ahead of their rivalry clash with Washington this Saturday. Oregon remains a strong candidate for playoff contention, even if they were to lose their final two regular-season games.
2. Ohio State (10-1)
With their victory over Indiana, the Buckeyes have solidified their spot in the playoff, although they must first defeat Michigan to ensure a rematch against the Ducks. This game also marks an opportunity to break Michigan’s three-game winning streak in the rivalry series. In a powerful showing, Michigan recently dominated Northwestern with a score of 50-6.
3. Texas (10-1)
Although their 31-14 win against Kentucky was nothing to write home about, Texas is consistently racking up victories against weaker opponents. They are preparing for a renewed rivalry with Texas A&M, where a win would propel them to the SEC championship game and likely secure their place in the playoffs regardless of other outcomes.
4. Penn State (10-1)
Penn State narrowly avoided a significant upset against Minnesota, pulling off a 26-25 victory thanks to some clutch plays, including crucial fourth-down conversions. They head into their season finale against Maryland as heavy favorites after being knocked out of Big Ten contention by Ohio State’s triumph.
5. Notre Dame (10-1)
Notre Dame dominated their second ranked military academy foe this season, defeating Army 49-14 after a convincing 51-14 win against Navy earlier. With one of the country’s top defenses, a win against Southern California could guarantee them a home playoff game.
6. Georgia (9-2)
The Bulldogs had a fantastic week, clinching their spot in the SEC Championship with strong performances from their rivals. They overwhelmed Massachusetts with a 59-21 victory and now face Georgia Tech, aiming for an at-large bid in the playoffs. The Yellow Jackets are known for their knack for close games, boasting a 5-1 record in tightly contested matchups.
7. Miami (10-1)
The Hurricanes bounced back from a challenging beginning to November with a commanding 42-14 victory over Wake Forest, scoring the final 25 points of the game. Currently standing at 6-1 in ACC play, they must secure a win against Syracuse next week to stay ahead of Clemson for a chance at the conference title, while the Orange seek their eighth victory, their best since 2018.
8. Indiana (10-1)
Despite suffering a loss, the Hoosiers may still rank above the Bulldogs and Hurricanes, although their weak schedule could hinder their standing with voters. With only three wins against teams with winning records—Washington, Nebraska, and Michigan, all at 6-5—they remain in a favorable position for playoff consideration.
9. Tennessee (10-1)
Tennessee had a stellar Saturday, beginning with a dominating 56-0 win over Texas-El Paso. Following Mississippi’s loss to Florida, the Volunteers could re-enter the hypothetical playoff picture, provided they avoid any mishaps against Vanderbilt in their upcoming game.
10. SMU (10-1)
SMU has finally cracked the top 10 following a strong 33-7 victory over Virginia. The Mustangs have been on a roll, winning eight consecutive games since a narrow loss to Brigham Young. The ACC is feeling optimistic about securing two playoff spots if both Miami and SMU finish the season with just one conference loss each.
