NBC’s “Dateline” is set to release an episode focusing on Lyle and Erik Menendez, who are currently imprisoned, following the launch of a controversial Netflix series about their parents’ murder in 1989 along with a documentary regarding their highly publicized trial.

The special, lasting two hours, will discuss new updates in the trial from 1993, as Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón pursues clemency for the brothers. The episode promises to showcase clips from a 2017 interview by Dateline NBC correspondent Keith Morrison with Lyle, which have not been aired before, according to NBC.

Entitled “The Menendez Brothers: Chance at Freedom,” the episode will also feature an interview with Gascón, who previously worked as a police officer and will explain his reasons for filing a request for a resentencing hearing.

Just last Thursday, Gascón addressed California Governor Gavin Newsom in a letter, presenting “credible allegations” regarding sexual and physical abuse by their father, Jose Menendez, a prominent music industry executive, along with highlighting the brothers’ commitment to rehabilitation over the years.

“The issue here isn’t whether they committed the crime, they clearly did,” Gascón remarked to Morrison. “What we’re discussing is whether, after 35 years of rehabilitation according to state law, it’s safe for them to be released?”

The broadcast will also include interviews with Pamela Bozanich, the prosecutor from the 1993 trial, who will address the backlash she has recently faced. She disclosed to Morrison that she bought a shotgun, the same type used by the Menendez brothers in their parents’ murder, as a means of protection.
