The latest addition at DCA isn’t just a lounge: Here’s what to know about the Capital One Landing
It’s not actually a lounge; Capital One refers to it as a Landing.
Essentially, it’s an airport dining spot where food is complimentary for Capital One Venture X cardholders, and every table is equipped with power outlets.
After looking at Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), Capital One seized the chance to transform a former security screening area into a contemporary airport restaurant. Collaborating with the acclaimed Chef José Andrés, the Capital One Landing aims to provide a more enjoyable experience than the usual airport lounge or quick-service eatery.
Spanning 5,500 square feet, this venue is located in National Hall, Terminal 2 (the two terminals at DCA connect behind security), and offers travelers a relaxed dining atmosphere reminiscent of a José Andrés restaurant amidst the airport hustle. Part of the Landing is situated right on the concourse, exposed to the traffic of passengers.
Following its unveiling, Capital One plans to roll out a similar concept at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, increasing its network which includes more traditional lounges at locations like Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Denver International Airport (DEN).
“If you create it, they will come,” said David Borowik, Head of Airport Experiences, Programs, and Partnerships at Capital One, during a preview of the space for YSL News. Acknowledging that Reagan National mainly serves passengers with quick turnarounds, the Landing focuses on those looking for a quick meal rather than a long stay in a lounge.
“Most travelers want a fast bite or a place to recharge and possibly catch up on YSL News or stream a movie,” Borowik noted. This insight influenced their design, ensuring that even a brief visit can maintain high-quality dining options, thanks to a menu that’s efficient and top-notch.
The Capital One Landing at DCA features a specialized tapas menu by Chef Andrés, including items like pan con tomate, gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), and croquetas, all inspired by his restaurant, The Bazaar. The quality rivals that of any of Andrés’ establishments.
For those in a hurry, Andrés designed a menu prioritizing quick service without sacrificing taste. Borowik mentioned that “the shrimp cooks quickly, literally taking just 60 seconds before it’s plated and served.” This swift service, paired with “authentic ingredients sourced from Spain,” guarantees a flavor profile superior to standard airport lounge offerings.
Capital One aims to “amaze and please” visitors with engaging features like a morning mimosa cart offering various juices, an afternoon cheesecake cart, and a gin and tonic cart influenced by local cocktail traditions.
Travelers can approach the counter for an assortment of cheeses, cured meats, desserts, coffee, and beverages, or they can use a QR code to order hot dishes straight to their seats.
Jenn Scheurich, who leads Capital One Travel and retail experience, mentioned her goal is for patrons to fulfill their cravings in “under five minutes.” She highlighted that guests can enjoy their favorite tapas, receive timely service, and still reach their gates without delay.
For busy travelers, Capital One is launching a new option called “On the Fly,” which is a quick-service dining experience that allows you to choose from various breakfast items, sandwiches, and salads, all made by Chef Andrés’ team. Those who hold Venture X and Venture X Business cards can enjoy a 50% discount, making their meal more affordable.
“One of the main attractions of this service is the discount,” said Borowik. “With a 50% reduction in price, travelers can get their meals at cost, which is perfect for those arriving late and wanting to head home with a nice meal.”
Accessing Capital One Landing
The Landing operates on a tiered access system: those with the Venture X card can enter without any fees, while other Capital One cardholders and non-cardholders can gain entry for fees ranging between $45 and $90. Additionally, young children under two can accompany these eligible cardholders for free, which helps families travel more easily.
◾ Venture X cardholders: Enjoy free access for themselves and one guest. Additional guests can enter for $45.
◾ Venture and Spark Miles cardholders: Entry can be bought for $45.
◾ Other cardholders and non-cardholders: Entry costs $90.
Bear in mind that space is limited. Travelers are encouraged to make reservations ahead of time, similar to booking a table at a restaurant, or they can inquire about walk-in availability.
All travelers, regardless of whether they hold a Capital One card, can order items from the “On the Fly” menu. However, Venture X cardholders will receive a 50% discount on their purchases here.
