We questioned each lawmaker on their commitment to the 2024 election results. Here are their responses.
Will you commit to certifying the election results, independent of whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris emerges victorious in November?
This question was posed by YSL News in a survey targeting all 382 House members seeking re-election and 91 Senators either running for re-election or still holding their positions come January. (The rest of the lawmakers had either lost their primary contests, are running for different offices, or are retiring from Congress.)
We also reached out to 747 individuals running for Congress whose names will appear on the ballot this year.
This inquiry follows the aftermath of the 2020 election, during which former President Trump expressed reluctance to accept his defeat to President Biden and attempted to persuade Congress members to challenge the electoral votes from various states.
On January 6, 2021, 139 Republicans in the House and eight from the Senate contested the electoral votes from Pennsylvania and Arizona in an effort to keep Trump in power. There were no objections from Democrats.
This year, as in past presidential elections, Congress will gather to count the electoral votes three days later. Will they endorse the outcome of the 2024 election? Here is what we discovered:
Most incumbents who replied pledge to uphold election results
While not all sitting members of Congress responded, over 150 who did indicated they would support the election results, some with stipulations. You can check below for more details:
Responses gathered as of Saturday, Oct.19, 12 p.m. EST
What do non-incumbent candidates have to say?
YSL News reached out to more than 700 candidates aiming for Congress this year, excluding write-ins. More than 200 of these candidates declared their commitment to uphold the election results.
