Check out the new Netflix series about the Menendez brothers: Trailer, release date, and cast info
Netflix has just released a sneak peek of its latest true-crime series.
The show, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” is the second part of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters” anthology that started with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” in 2022, which stirred quite a bit of interest and controversy.
This season continues the true crime theme, focusing on the infamous Menendez brothers who were sentenced for murdering their wealthy parents back in the late 1980s. Their case captured national attention due to the investigation and trials that followed.
According to Netflix’s statement on August 27, “In this second installment of the ‘Monster’ anthology series, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan explore another sensational case that gripped the nation in the ’90s. ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ recounts the events of two brothers who murdered their parents on August 20, 1989, and the aftermath of the gruesome murders.”
Here’s what we know about the upcoming series so far.
What is ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ about?
“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” presents a dramatized account of the notorious crimes committed by the Menendez brothers.
Similar to “The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which featured Evan Peters, the new series boasts a talented cast including Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem, portraying dramatized versions of the real individuals involved.
The roles of Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez will be played by Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, respectively. During the actual trials from 1994 to 1996, the brothers became known simply as “the Menendez brothers” after their conviction for murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.
The shocking murders and the ensuing legal battles captured the attention of the American public after police discovered José and Kitty dead in their Beverly Hills home in August 1989. José was shot six times with a shotgun at close range, while Kitty suffered ten shots. The brothers were at the scene when law enforcement arrived, claiming they had been out at a movie and festival when the attacks occurred.
Eventually, both brothers confessed to the killings but argued that they were driven to it by years of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. In contrast, the prosecution claimed their motive was to gain access to their parents’ substantial wealth, resulting in their first-degree murder convictions and life sentences.
