Who is Sabrina Carpenter, the pop star and Grammy best new artist candidate?
Sabrina Carpenter, known for her hit “Short n’ Sweet,” has made quite a splash in the music industry in 2024, but her journey to fame has been long and demanding, more so than casual listeners might assume.
At the 2025 Grammy Awards, she received an outstanding six nominations, including four of the top categories: Album of the Year for “Short n’ Sweet,” Record of the Year for “Espresso,” Song of the Year for “Please Please Please,” and Best New Artist.
Despite her prominent presence over the last year through radio play, streaming, a major headlining tour, and opening for her friend Taylor Swift on the monumental Eras Tour, Carpenter, now 25, has been working in the entertainment industry for more than ten years.
“I’ve always stayed true to myself and trusted my work since I was young,” Carpenter shared with People magazine in January. “I’ve come to understand that it’s the little steps taken over time that lead you to this point.”
Born in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, near Allentown and Bethlehem, Carpenter has a famous relative—Nancy Cartwright, who voices Bart Simpson on “The Simpsons.” She began her journey by posting covers of Adele and Christina Aguilera on YouTube when she was just 10 years old.
Here’s what else you should know about this rising star.
Did Sabrina Carpenter appear on a Disney Channel show?
Carpenter’s pursuit of stardom kicked off in 2009 when she impressed judges by securing third place in “The Next Miley Cyrus Project,” a singing contest led by the well-known singer.
However, it was acting that initially drew Carpenter into the entertainment world, with minor roles in NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and Fox’s comedy “The Goodwin Games.”
She became a part of Disney with songs for Radio Disney (“Smile,” “All You Need”) before snagging the role of Maya Hart in the Disney Channel series “Girl Meets World,” for which she recorded the theme song.
Her four-year engagement on the show, which featured 72 episodes, coincided with a recording contract from Disney’s Hollywood Records and jumpstarted her music career with the 2014 EP “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying,” followed by the album “Eyes Wide Open.”
What songs does Sabrina Carpenter perform?
From 2016’s “Evolution” up to her 2024 album “Short n’ Sweet” that established her as a chart-topping artist, Carpenter has released three more albums, generating several moderate hits like “Almost Love,” “Nonsense,” and “Feather.”
While her 2022 album “Emails I Can’t Send” received praise for its thoughtful lyrics and catchy disco-pop vibe, along with a performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, it didn’t ignite a pop culture phenomenon.
That changed with the launch of “Short n’ Sweet” in August 2024, which was produced with contributions from notable collaborators, including Jack Antonoff, a longtime associate of Taylor Swift.
Before the album’s release, Carpenter dropped its lead single “Espresso,” which surged to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in various countries.
Her subsequent singles, “Please Please Please” and “Taste” (the latter featuring a controversial music video showcasing cartoon violence and co-starring actress Jenna Ortega), achieved a remarkable milestone. Carpenter became the first artist since The Beatles to have three consecutive hits in the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week.
“I don’t think I’ve fully absorbed everything yet, as I’m trying to stay present,” she told People about this overwhelming success. “But it makes me happy to see my songs resonate with so many people from different backgrounds. That’s the reason I enjoy writing songs.”
