Is ‘Elementary’ necessary to watch before ‘Watson’?
No, it’s not required for viewers to have seen “Elementary” prior to watching “Watson.” Some fans of Sherlock, however, are describing the new series as a sequel to “Elementary.”
The only official link between “Watson” and CBS’ 2012 show “Elementary” is that both series draw inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” and writer Craig Sweeny.
Sweeny contributed to several episodes of “Elementary” and is the leading writer for “Watson.”
Throughout its seven seasons, “Elementary” takes an innovative approach to the traditional Sherlock story by featuring Dr. Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu, as the first female counterpart to Holmes’ cherished friend.
Entertainment reporter Jack Ori mentioned in Screen Rant that “Watson” is “the closest thing to a spiritual successor to ‘Elementary.'”
Ori believes that “Elementary” added depth to the classic Sherlock characters, a quality he hopes will be reflected in “Watson.”
