The U.S. is looking into a leak regarding intelligence on Israel’s plans to attack Iran: Latest updates

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Sunday that a serious investigation is in progress concerning the “very troubling” disclosure of classified U.S. intelligence documents that detail Israel’s plans for a counterstrike against Iran.

During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Johnson stated that he would be briefed on the investigation later that day. “There are some serious allegations involved,” he commented. “We’re keeping a close watch on this situation.”

The leaked documents surfaced via the Telegram messaging platform last week, reportedly created by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. They include U.S. assessments of military strategies planned by the Israeli Air Force and Navy, aided by satellite imagery collected on October 15 and 16. The Pentagon has confirmed it is examining the leak.

Israel has vowed to respond decisively to a ballistic missile assault from Iran on October 1, marking the second direct attack on Israel within a six-month span. President Joe Biden mentioned in response to inquiries that he is well-informed about Israel’s intended timings and methods for striking Iran.

He also highlighted the possibility of easing the cycle of retaliatory strikes between the two nations.

Recent Developments:

∎ Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced he has instructed his ministry to initiate legal action against French President Emmanuel Macron after France prohibited Israeli companies from participating in an upcoming military naval expo.

∎ The Israeli military has reported ongoing “targeted operations” against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon as aerial threats escalate from both sides. Israeli fighter jets struck multiple militant locations and the launcher used to launch missiles towards Western Galilee earlier on Sunday.

Israel alerts Lebanese residents to evacuate before strikes

On Sunday, Israel announced plans to target sites in Lebanon associated with the financial operations of Iran-aligned Hezbollah, releasing maps indicating potential targets and urging civilians to vacate the areas.

This warning followed Israel’s confirmation of an airstrike on Hezbollah’s intelligence facility in Beirut. The Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, linked to Hezbollah, operates over 30 branches across Lebanon, including 15 in central Beirut and surrounding suburbs.

Avichay Adraee, an Israeli spokesperson for Arab media, shared the maps on social media, cautioning those living nearby.

“You are near locations that are affiliated with Hezbollah, which the Israeli military intends to target soon,” Adraee warned. “For your own safety, please evacuate these buildings and adjacent areas immediately and maintain a distance of at least 500 meters.”

UN criticizes Israel for recent strikes; Israel calls the report ‘overstated’

The U.N. peace envoy for the Middle East condemned the ongoing attacks on civilians after Israeli airstrikes in Beit Lahiya, Gaza, late Saturday. The Gaza Health Ministry reported at least 87 deaths and over 40 injuries.

“The situation in Gaza is worsening,” remarked Tor Wennesland, the U.N. Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. “Distressing scenes are emerging in the northern Gaza Strip amidst the conflict, relentless Israeli bombing, and an escalating humanitarian disaster.”

The Israeli military rejected the casualty figures cited by the Hamas-run ministry as “exaggerated,” asserting that the numbers do not correspond with the information available to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) regarding the precision of the munitions used and the specific damage incurred.

Israeli commander clarifies that Sinwar’s killing was not accidental

After the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, which many reports described as an accident, Israeli Colonel Sivan Bloch emphasized on Sunday that it resulted from skilled military action and was “not just happenstance.”

Col. Bloch’s 828th Brigade has been continuing operations in Rafah to locate and dismantle remaining Hamas infrastructure, combat militants, and search for possible hostages.

According to Bloch, a vigilant soldier detected unusual movement nearby, which nearly went uninvestigated initially, but subsequent foot tracking led them to fresh footprints. These searches eventually led them to a house where they discovered Sinwar and his escorts. A confrontation ensued, resulting in the militants being killed.

“Half jokingly, we said, ‘Walla, is that perhaps Yahya Sinwar?’ We approached him, and there was no doubt about it. He is easily identifiable,” Bloch recounted. “Honestly, we were skeptical at first.”
