The Utah Hockey Club has decided to pursue a different path with another fan survey after the popular choice of a permanent nickname was dismissed.

The Utah Yeti made it to the final six names in the fan voting for the NHL’s newest team, but KSL and The Athletic reported last week that their trademark application was denied. The team, owned by Smith Entertainment Group, has stated that they are no longer pursuing the Yeti name.

“An executive from SEG indicated that they explored all possibilities to make Yeti a reality, but YETI Coolers, LLC ultimately refused to agree to a co-existence deal,” the team noted in a statement.

Instead, fans who attend the upcoming four home games, starting Wednesday night, will have the chance to vote on three new options:

• Utah Hockey Club
• Utah Mammoth
• Utah Wasatch

The temporary name for this season, Utah Hockey Club, along with Mammoth, were among the finalists in the earlier round of voting.

Wasatch, a new possibility, was not included in the original 20 suggestions. The name is inspired by the mountain range that looms over the eastern side of the Salt Lake valley and aims to “honor the concept of a legendary snow creature,” according to the team.

“This next round includes not only name options but also logos and branding concepts, so only fans present at the next four home games at the Delta Center, starting tonight, can take part in the voting,” the team stated.

Fans will be able to vote during home games held on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday. The club plans to unveil the permanent name before the start of next season.
