Victoria Monét is opening up about her breakup.

In a detailed post on X on Monday, the Grammy-winning R&B artist shared that she and John Gaines parted ways 10 months ago.

The pair, who had been “avoiding a formal statement” on their breakup, decided to confirm their status and respond to the “questions and misleading claims about our relationship.”

“We have spent much time reflecting on whether we owe anyone an explanation while we recover, knowing how social media can amplify truths and distort falsehoods,” they stated. “In the end, we chose to be transparent to clarify everything for the sake of our healing.”

Monét and Gaines, who co-parent their 3-year-old daughter Hazel, did not specify why they split, but they emphasized that “no infidelity, toxic behavior or drama” were involved. Speculation had circulated online suggesting that Monét might have started her relationship with Gaines while he was still with someone else.

“We both need to grow in ways that are best done individually to be the best parents for our daughter,” they continued. “It simply wasn’t meant to be, and that’s perfectly fine. We still hold each other in high regard and approach every interaction with love for our family.”

They further expressed: “Our main focus forever is our amazing daughter. Nothing can change that. We are dedicated to our own personal growth and trust that in time, things will align as they should.”

Monét and Gaines attended the 66th Annual Grammy Awards together with Hazel in February, during which Monét won Best New Artist and celebrated the success of her debut album, “Jaguar II.” The album includes the hit single “On My Mama,” which achieved the top spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

From Sacramento, Monét has also written songs for artists like T.I., Blackpink, Chloe x Halle, and notably, Ariana Grande.

“In good faith, we have been avoiding a formal announcement about something so personal as love. We initially wanted to keep this private because making it public would likely bring old pains back, but it’s becoming increasingly hard to keep quiet. Yes, we have noticed the speculations and misplaced accusations surrounding our relationship timeline, and we’ve spent considerable time deciding if we needed to clarify our situation as we heal, knowing how social media can distort facts. Ultimately, we chose to be open to alleviate uncertainties for our healing journey. For the past 10 months, we’ve been trying to navigate this change respectfully and privately. While we still genuinely care for and respect one another, we are no longer together. There was no cheating, toxic behavior, or drama involved. We simply have personal development to do that is more effective apart, ensuring we can be the best for our daughter. It just wasn’t meant to happen, and that’s okay. We hold each other in high regard and approach our family with love. Our daughter is our top priority now and always. No label can alter that fact. We remain committed to our growth and trust that God will guide us to where we need to be. To our supporters, family, and friends, thank you for your kindness and concern. Please allow us the space to co-parent peacefully for Hazel’s well-being. We hope that when you see us together with her, you understand and are gentle. Thank you for hearing us out, and we ask for your continued good thoughts and prayers.”
