South Dakota vs. Portland State Football Game Canceled Due to Illness in Vikings Team
The football match scheduled for Saturday between Portland State and South Dakota has been canceled because of an outbreak of illness in the Vikings’ football team, as confirmed by both universities.
According to South Dakota, a case of pertussis (also known as whooping cough) was identified in the Portland State football team just two days prior, leading to several players falling ill.
Portland State reassured that “no players on the Viking team are seriously ill at this time.”
The Centers for Disease Control describes pertussis as a highly contagious respiratory infection that may start with typical cold symptoms but can persist for several months.
It remains uncertain whether the game can be rescheduled. The match was supposed to start at 4 p.m. ET at Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Currently, Portland State (0-2) is set to face Boise State next Saturday, while South Dakota (1-1) will take on Drake University.
Boise State made a statement saying, “We are in contact with Portland State’s administration and will continue to monitor the situation closely. The health and safety of everyone involved is our top priority.”
