Volkswagen is recalling nearly 99,000 electric vehicles due to defective door handles

Volkswagen Group of America Inc. has announced a recall for a selection of its electric vehicles from the years 2021-2024.

Approximately 99,000 ID.4 vehicles are being recalled because their doors could unexpectedly open while being driven.

Here’s what you need to know about the recall as reported by the NHTSA on September 4:

Volkswagen EV recall details

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that Volkswagen is recalling 98,806 electric SUVs to address issues with their door handles.

The NHTSA noted that the door handles in these vehicles may not have been produced according to “factory specifications.”

According to Reuters, moisture may enter the printed circuit board located in the doors, leading to operational failures and potentially causing the door locks to unlock.

How to check if your car is affected by this recall

The NHTSA has indicated that Volkswagen dealers will inspect and replace door handles and update the vehicle software at no cost to owners. Notifications to vehicle owners are expected to be sent out by November 1, and Volkswagen customer service can be contacted at 1-800-893-5298.

Owners can use the YSL News automotive recall database or search the NHTSA database for information on recalls. The NHTSA website provides a search function using the vehicle identification number (VIN) to find specific recalls.
