Understanding Listeria
Listeria is a type of bacteria that can contaminate various foods. Consuming contaminated food can lead to listeriosis, an infection characterized by symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, and digestive issues, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Individuals at greater risk of listeria infection include newborns, pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, and older adults (aged 65 and over). The CDC reports that approximately 1,600 people get sick from listeria annually, with around 260 fatalities.
A recent listeria outbreak connected to Boar’s Head cold cuts, particularly liverwurst, led to multiple fatalities this past summer. Following the outbreak, the company recalled all deli products produced at its Jarratt, Virginia facility in July 2024 after tests revealed listeria contamination in meats sliced at deli counters, according to the CDC.
This outbreak resulted in 10 deaths and 61 illnesses (of which 60 involved hospitalization) across 19 states, reported the CDC.
